Daniel Radcliffe has shed his Harry Potter skin and evolved into a super Broadway song-and-dance man. Who knew he would be a wizard on his feet? <\/p>\n

In one bit of comic nonsense in the musical How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, he jumps up and down on a sofa with the agility of a champion gymnast, in a nod to the meltdown moment of a certain box office superstar.<\/p>\n

\u2018We had an intelligent audience in tonight,\u2019 Daniel quipped, when I visited him backstage at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. \u2018They got the Tom Cruise reference.\u2019<\/p>\n

They certainly did. Daniel was referring to the infamous television
\nincident when Cruise jumped up and down on Oprah Winfrey\u2019s couch.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s
\nalso an astute nod, intentional or not, to the Spider-Man musical,
\nright at the top of the show, when a rope and a\u00a0 couple of wires dangle
\nfrom the rafters and up comes Daniel from the orchestra pit.<\/p>\n

He
\nsucceeds in How To Succeed in a way I could not have imagined. A year
\nago, he told me he couldn\u2019t dance for toffee. Now he\u2019s charging about
\nthe stage with a bunch of the best hoofers on Broadway.<\/p>\n

\u2018Sometimes I was dancing for nine hours a day when I wasn\u2019t filming,\u2019 Daniel told me.<\/p>\n

\u2018The
\nthing was to keep practising and practising until you could do it
\nwithout thinking about it. The aim was to be effortless \u2014 or to appear
\nto seem effortless.\u2019<\/p>\n

He praised the team who drilled him in the
\nmusical theatre arts. Spencer Soloman was his dance tutor and, as an
\nassociate of How To Succeed\u2019s director and choreographer Rob Ashford, he
\nhelped Daniel achieve the Ashford \u2018style\u2019.<\/p>\n

Mark Meylan, Barbara Houseman and Penny Dyer were, respectively, his vocal, voice and dialect coaches.<\/p>\n

He
\nmanaged to fit all those tasks in between completing\u00a0 the final Potter
\nfilm, Deathly\u00a0 Hallows: Part 2, and shooting and completing the screen
\nversion\u00a0 of The Woman In Black for\u00a0 Hammer Films.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018I didn\u2019t want
\nthe last Harry Potter film to come out and\u00a0 people to say: \u201cSo, what
\ndoes he do now? How does he follow that?\u201d I\u2019m already doing it! I\u2019ve
\nmade another film and I\u2019m on Broadway for the second time,\u2019 he told me,
\nin a reference to his five-month run in Equus \u2014 a repeat of the part
\nhe\u2019d played in the West End.<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019m doing this for nine months, and I did Equus for five months here and that felt like a long time. I was exhausted after that, so I have to learn to keep my energy levels up with diet and exercise.<\/p>\n

\u2018The rest of the cast work\u00a0 tremendously hard, but I have just two big numbers \u2014 Grand Old Ivy and Brotherhood Of Man \u2014 and there\u2019s a lot of dancing and singing. They\u2019re exhilarating to do and I love that this is so\u00a0 different from everything else I\u2019ve done. I\u2019m not repeating myself,\u2019 Daniel added.<\/p>\n

The show\u2019s in previews for a few weeks and director Ashford and music chief David Chase are still tinkering with it. <\/p>\n

\u2018I hear the word \u201cchanges\u201d and I go: \u201cWhat changes?\u201d But I\u2019m OK with it. That\u2019s what previews are for.\u2019<\/p>\n

I have to tell you that he gives such a confident and winning performance that it\u2019s hard to believe he\u2019s never done a musical before \u2014 plus his comic timing in this satire about manipulating your way to the top is sublime.<\/p>\n

Daniel has great support from his romantic co-star Rose Hemingway, and from John Larroquette, who plays his boss.<\/p>\n

He mentioned in passing that there has been talk between him and producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron about doing a big-screen version of How To Succeed. But if that were to happen the book (by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert) would have to be overhauled. It works fine on stage, but for the screen someone would have to give it more zing.<\/p>\n
