STANDARD Chartered Bank Zimbabwe chief executive Mr Washington Matsaira is set to step down in January next year to pursue “other” interests.<\/p>\n
Mr Matsaira, a renowned banker, has been at the helm of the country’s oldest bank for almost 11 years. He will be replaced by Mr Ralph Watungwa, currently on secondment to Zambia as head of consumer banking.<\/p>\n
“I have decided to leave the bank early in order to pursue other interests,” said Mr Matsaira, who was also area general manager for Botswana and Zambia since 2005.<\/p>\n
“It gives me great satisfaction to know that I am leaving a great team that is ready to take the bank to greater heights.”<\/p>\n
Standard Chartered (SA) chief executive Mr Ebenezer Essoka will assume the role of area general manager while Mr Watungwa will report to him.<\/p>\n
Mr Matsaira joined the bank 34 years ago, occupying various senior management roles that saw him rise to the position of chief executive in Uganda and Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n
“I have been very privileged to work in Standard Chartered Bank as it has great people and a fantastic culture.<\/p>\n
“I am particularly pleased to note that our business in Zimbabwe has turned the corner and is now operating profitably. Our Botswana and Zambia businesses are performing solidly. All this bodes well for the future,” he said.<\/p>\n
The incoming Stanchart Zimbabwe chief executive Mr Watungwa has vast experience in consumer and wholesale banking, having worked for the financial institution in Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Zambia.<\/p>\n
