{"id":288225,"date":"2011-03-03T15:47:45","date_gmt":"2011-03-03T15:47:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/03\/libya-battle-for-oil-town-rages-on\/"},"modified":"2011-03-03T15:47:45","modified_gmt":"2011-03-03T15:47:45","slug":"libya-battle-for-oil-town-rages-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/03\/libya-battle-for-oil-town-rages-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Libya: Battle for Oil Town Rages On"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"59.6098535286\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/><!-- close google_banner_mid div ---><\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.english.rfi.fr\/africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/7305b8cerfi-logo-en.jpg\" alt=\"Radio France Internationale (Paris)\" title=\"Visit Radio France Internationale (Paris)\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p><!-- begin story layout piece here --><\/p>\n<p> 3 March 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Forces loyal to Moamer Kadhafi have launched a fresh air strike against the rebel-held town of Brega, residents say, one day after clashes between rebels and pro-regime fighters killed at least 12 people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Around two hours ago, warplanes dropped a bomb in the area between the oil company and the residential area,&#8221; Fattah al-Moghrabi, director of supplies for Brega hospital, told AFP. &#8220;As far as I know, there was no casualties,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Other people at the hospital also confirmed a strike.<\/p>\n<p><!-- close google_inset_a div ---><\/p>\n<p>Opponents say at least 12 people died in the fighting yesterday as anti-Kadhafi forces repelled a offensive on the oil town of Brega.<\/p>\n<p>International pressure has been mounting for opposing a no-fly zone to stop Kadhafi from attacking his own people.<\/p>\n<p>However, Nato has no intention of intervening in Libya but is planning for &#8220;all eventualities&#8221;, alliance chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Rasmussen said at a press conference that NATO officials &#8220;take note&#8221; of a request from the Libyan opposition for foreign nations to launch airstrikes against mercenaries hired by Moamer Kadhafi. Opponents control the eastern coast and parts of Libya&#8217;s west, but Kadhafi remains in control of the capital.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on state television, Kadhafi warned that the &#8220;battle will be very, very long&#8221; if foreign powers intervened. Separately, three Dutch soldiers were taken prisoner at the weekend by armed men loyal to Kadhafi during an operation to evacuate civilians.<\/p>\n<p>In Caracas, officials said Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Kadhafi had discussed plans for an international peacekeeping mission to mediate the crisis in Libya.
