{"id":287939,"date":"2011-03-03T13:16:14","date_gmt":"2011-03-03T13:16:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/03\/court-probes-gaddafis-crimes\/"},"modified":"2011-03-03T13:16:14","modified_gmt":"2011-03-03T13:16:14","slug":"court-probes-gaddafis-crimes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/03\/court-probes-gaddafis-crimes\/","title":{"rendered":"Court probes Gaddafi&#8217;s &#8216;crimes&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"139.429063509\">\n        \t\t  <span><br \/>\n    <span>3 March 2011<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Last updated at <\/span><span>08:16 ET<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>        <!--  Embedding the video player --><br \/>\n<!--  This is the embedded player component --><\/p>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<div>\n<div readability=\"7\">\n                                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"holding\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/f86faf9b10_51504309.jpg\" alt=\"Footage said to show fighting in Brega\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Please turn on JavaScript.<\/strong> Media requires JavaScript to play.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>        <!-- embedding script --><\/p><\/div>\n<p>            <!-- companion banner --> <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<!-- END - companion banner --><!-- caption --><\/p>\n<p>Watch: John Simpson on the battle for Brega<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<!-- END - caption -->\n        <\/div>\n<p><!-- end of the embedded player component --><\/p>\n<p><!-- Player embedded -->                      <\/p>\n<p>The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has said he will investigate Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, his sons and senior aides for crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n<p>Luis Moreno-Ocampo said no-one had the right to massacre civilians.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of people are thought to have died in the violence after security forces targeted protesters in unrest which began on 17 February.<\/p>\n<p>Col Gaddafi vowed to fight on despite losing control of much of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Wednesday, his forces launched air strikes on the oil terminal town of Brega, sources in the town said.<\/p>\n<p>The strikes come a day after clashes between rebels and government troops in the town in which 14 people died.<\/p>\n<p>In other developments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Libya&#8217;s oil production has been halved, National Oil Corporation head Shukri Ghanem tells AFP<\/li>\n<li> The Netherlands confirms <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-12633415\">three of its marines have been captured<\/a> by pro-Gaddafi forces in Sirte while helping to evacuate two civilians<\/li>\n<li> Libya&#8217;s governing council rejects a peace initiative by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, but the Arab League says it is studying the proposal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>&#8216;Serious crimes&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Moreno-Ocampo said Col Gaddafi, his inner circle and some of his sons with de facto authority would be investigated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The office of the prosecutor decided to open an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity committed in Libya since 15 February,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Delegations of peaceful demonstrators were attacked by security forces. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During the coming weeks, the office will investigate who are the most responsible for the most serious incidents, for the most serious crimes committed in Libya.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the prosecutor also said the oppposition would be investigated if it committed crimes.<\/p>\n<p>The violence has led to a major humanitarian crisis on the Tunisian border, with tens of thousands of foreigners stranded and unable to get home.<\/p>\n<p>Some 80-90,000 people have fled to Tunisia since the unrest began and tens of thousands more are waiting to cross, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/4d6e68089.html\">the UN says.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Until recently most of the refugees have been Egyptian, but more than 5,000 Bangladeshis crossed on Wednesday and there are also large numbers from East Asia.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC&#8217;s Jim Muir on the border says it will be a monumental task to get them home.<\/p>\n<p>Britain, France, Spain and other countries <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-12632745\">are conducting emergency airlifts<\/a> to evacuate those gathered at the border.<\/p>\n<p>  <span>&#8216;Bombs dropped&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It was not clear what was being targeted in the air strikes on Brega.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Around two hours ago, warplanes dropped a bomb in the area between the oil company and the residential area,&#8221; hospital official Fattah al-Moghrabi said, quoted by AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As far as I know, there were no casualties.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A rebel fighter said he had witnessed the strikes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was here with my people, tightening security around the refinery, then we heard the sound of planes,&#8221; he told AFP. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was one plane that flew over three times. I think it was a Sukhoi. The third time, it dropped bombs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rebels said planes had also bombed positions in Ajdabiya, a larger town further inside rebel territory.<\/p>\n<p>The attacks came as rebels celebrated the outcome of Wednesday&#8217;s fighting, in which they apparently cleared Brega of government forces.<\/p>\n<p>BBC diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus says the fighting underscores the fact that neither side seems to have the knock-out punch capable of defeating the other. <\/p>\n<p>Col Gaddafi appears unable to re-capture the eastern part of his country, and for now his opponents seem unable to mount a major offensive against Tripoli. <\/p>\n<p>A stalemate on the ground in Libya could be a serious problem for international diplomacy, our correspondent says.<\/p>\n<p>Rebels were reported as saying pro-Gaddafi forces had been pushed back to Ras Lanuf, another oil terminal to the west of Brega, but were preparing another attack.<\/p>\n<p>They are calling for UN-backed air strikes against pro-Gaddafi forces, but Western officials are cautious of military involvement.<\/p>\n<p>Our correspondent says that diplomatic measures against Col Gaddafi were intended to hasten his departure and express support for the Libyan people&#8217;s aspiration for freedom.<\/p>\n<p>But there is now a danger that, having been painted into a corner, the Libyan leader may have little option but to cling on to power for as long as possible, he adds.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/f86faf9b10_51504309-150x150.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Follow this link:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/world-africa-12636798\" title=\"Court probes Gaddafi's 'crimes'\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Court probes Gaddafi&#8217;s &#8216;crimes&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 3 March 2011 Last updated at 08:16 ET Please turn on JavaScript. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-287939","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
