{"id":287756,"date":"2011-03-03T10:12:33","date_gmt":"2011-03-03T10:12:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/03\/new-air-strikes-in-libya-oil-town\/"},"modified":"2011-03-03T10:12:33","modified_gmt":"2011-03-03T10:12:33","slug":"new-air-strikes-in-libya-oil-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/03\/new-air-strikes-in-libya-oil-town\/","title":{"rendered":"New air strikes in Libya oil town"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"73.6044880785\">\n        \t\t  <span><br \/>\n    <span>3 March 2011<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Last updated at <\/span><span>05:12 ET<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Libyan oil terminal town of Brega has been targeted with air strikes, sources in the town said.<\/p>\n<p>The strikes come a day after clashes between rebels and government troops in the town in which 14 people died.<\/p>\n<p>Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi took control there on Wednesday morning but were forced out by opposition fighters later in the day.<\/p>\n<p>Col Gaddafi has lost control of the eastern half of Libya during two weeks of unrest but has vowed to fight on.<\/p>\n<p>In a televised speech on Wednesday, Col Gaddafi also said that thousands of Libyans would die if Western forces intervened. <\/p>\n<p>Thousands of people are thought to have died in the violence after security forces fired on protesters in the early stages of the protests.<\/p>\n<p>International Criminal Court prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo has said that he will announce the names of between 10 and 15 Libyan leaders that the court intends to investigate for crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--  Embedding the video player --><br \/>\n<!--  This is the embedded player component --><\/p>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<div>\n<div readability=\"7\">\n                                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"holding\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/b6db156c40_51501439.jpg\" alt=\"Rebels with weapons\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Please turn on JavaScript.<\/strong> Media requires JavaScript to play.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>        <!-- embedding script --><\/p><\/div>\n<p>            <!-- companion banner --> <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<!-- END - companion banner --><!-- caption --><\/p>\n<p>John Simpson: &#8220;Rebels may head west against Gaddafi&#8217;s forces&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<!-- END - caption -->\n        <\/div>\n<p><!-- end of the embedded player component --><\/p>\n<p><!-- Player embedded -->      <\/p>\n<p>It was not clear what was being targeted in the air strikes on Brega.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Around two hours ago, warplanes dropped a bomb in the area between the oil  company and the residential area,&#8221; hospital official Fattah al-Moghrabi said, quoted by AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As far as I know, there were no casualties.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A rebel spokesman said planes had also bombed positions in Ajdabiya, a larger town further inside rebel territory.<\/p>\n<p>Rebels were reported as saying pro-Gaddafi forces were in Ras Lanuf, another oil terminal to the west of Brega, and were preparing another attack.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, the Netherlands confirmed three of its marines had been captured by pro-Gaddafi forces.<\/p>\n<p>They had been helping to evacuate two European civilians when they were detained in the city of Sirte.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/b6db156c40_51501439-150x150.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>See more here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/world-africa-12632482\" title=\"New air strikes in Libya oil town\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New air strikes in Libya oil town<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 3 March 2011 Last updated at 05:12 ET The Libyan oil terminal town of Brega has been targeted with air strikes, sources in the town said.
