As Kate Middleton prepares to become Princess Catherine, there\u2019s a lot more for her to worry about than what Pippa\u2019s got lined up for the hen night.<\/p>\n

Because once all the fuss and flag-waving has died down, and she embarks on her new regime of duties \u2014 starting with a royal visit to Canada at the end of June, any gaps in her knowledge of etiquette and protocol are set to be ruthlessly exposed. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s why she\u2019s allegedly being trained up by experts in everything from how to greet foreign dignitaries to the correct method of eating a grape. After all, Kate is posh, but she\u2019s not aristocracy \u2014 and none of this will come naturally to her. <\/p>\n

\n\"Perfect<\/p>\n

As a fellow commoner, I am equally un-trained when it comes to deportment, curtseying, banqueting and handling servants. So in a bid to understand just what Kate\u2019s up against, I booked in for Princess lessons with etiquette expert Jean Broke-Smith. <\/p>\n

As the former principal of the famed Lucie Clayton School of Grooming and Modelling for 30 years, she has taught politicians, royalty and TV stars, and casually says: \u2018I\u2019ve trained all Prince William\u2019s girlfriends. Apart from Middleton.\u2019 <\/p>\n

This, she explains, is because \u2018Middleton\u2019 was not a deb.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018She seems a nice enough girl,\u2019 Jean observes. \u2018But she will have to learn to be a princess.\u2019<\/p>\n

My own ancestry involves Russian egg-importers and Mancunian tobacconists. I suspect I\u2019m going to find this a challenge.<\/p>\n

LESSON ONE:\u00a0 Greeting Royalty<\/h2>\n

Prince William has grown up meeting foreign dignitaries and royalty from all over the world. \u2018It\u2019s a way of life for him,\u2019 Jean says. Kate, however, will have to concentrate hard to avoid making a faux pas.<\/p>\n

\u2018Do you remember when Michelle Obama put her arm round the Queen to shepherd her?\u2019 Jean shudders. \u2018One never, ever touches the Queen.\u2019<\/p>\n

Princess Catherine will have to show subservience to other royals, and shake hands several hundred times a week, for the rest of her life. I always thought a handshake was simple enough \u2014 it\u2019s not. <\/p>\n

\n\"Pleased<\/p>\n

My first few attempts are too firm, and I\u2019m waiting for Jean to shake first. \u2018No, no,\u2019 she says. \u2018Royalty always offers the hand first.\u2019<\/p>\n

As if that\u2019s not enough, curtseying is a minefield. The full, sweeping dip, beloved of costume dramas, is appropriate only in a big, floor-length dress, Jean says. <\/p>\n

Only the Queen herself requires a floor-sweeper at formal events \u2014 for other royals, a bob will suffice.<\/p>\n

As far as Jean is concerned, protocol begins with, \u2018bum in, shoulders back!\u2019 she says, tapping my bottom. \u2018SQUEEZE the muscles in!\u2019 It\u2019s like being at a particularly vicious Pilates class. <\/p>\n

The \u2018bob\u2019 is hands at the sides, one foot in front of the other, and a knee-bend. Apparently, I\u2019m \u2018sticking my hands out as if I\u2019m about to take off\u2019. That\u2019s because I\u2019m trying not to fall over. <\/p>\n

LESSON TWO:\u00a0 Sitting And Standing<\/h2>\n

I always thought my posture was quite good. In fact, Jean says, it\u2019s dreadful. Given the hours that princesses must stand still, a good stance is crucial. <\/p>\n

\u2018One foot slightly in front of the other, toes out,\u2019 says Jean. It\u2019s basically third position in ballet. She prods me till I vacuum in my tummy (no easy task). <\/p>\n

\u2018Shoulders back, head up!\u2019 she says. \u2018Imagine a wire running from the top of your head, holding you up,\u2019 she adds. \u2018And pretend you\u2019ve a zip running up your middle, holding you in.\u2019 I feel like a reject from the Build-A\u2013Bear workshop, vainly trying to keep my stuffing in. <\/p>\n

\n\"Shoulders<\/p>\n

Shoulders back, head up: Learning how to stand tall<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sitting is equally testing. One must brush the chair with the back of your calves \u2014 \u2018so you aren\u2019t going to miss the chair\u2019.<\/p>\n

After lowering my bottom onto the edge, I should then push back into the seat. Then I place my feet to one side. I may cross my ankles \u2014 \u2018but you must never cross your legs, it\u2019s masculine\u2019.<\/p>\n

The purpose of all this is to ensure that knees are Velcro-ed together. A flash of princess-ly undergarments would be a severe broach of protocol. The standing up is not so easy, as I\u2019m required to shunt forward, lift myself elegantly, and end up in <\/p>\n

second position again. I topple sideways. \u2018Oh dear,\u2019 sighs Jean. I hope Kate\u2019s mastered the art of standing up better than I have.<\/p>\n

LESSON THREE: Walking<\/h2>\n

For a princess, the correct gait of walking even has a name \u2014 The Glide. I show Jean my \u2018princess walk.\u2019 \u2018You\u2019re crossing your knees over each other,\u2019 sighs Jean.<\/p>\n

I think I picked that up from America\u2019s Next Top Model. <\/p>\n

\u2018Start with all your weight on your back foot,\u2019 says Jean. My feet should be half a foot-length apart, \u2018otherwise you\u2019ll be striding like a giant\u2019, and the correct way to place the weight is heel, instep, then toe.<\/p>\n

\u2018You should brush your foot lightly against the other heel as you step, so you can tell your feet are aligned,\u2019 she instructs. <\/p>\n

I\u2019m beginning to feel like John Cleese. And I\u2019m holding my hands out as stiffly as a three-year-old at dance class again. \u2018Loosely!\u2019 says Jean. \u2018By your sides!\u2019 <\/p>\n

She ends up crouching on the floor, in a desperate bid to reposition my feet. I don\u2019t remember this at the royal engagement.<\/p>\n

\u2018No, well, Middleton walks very well,\u2019 concedes Jean. \u2018I suspect she\u2019s already had lessons.\u2019<\/p>\n

LESSON FOUR: Table Manners <\/h2>\n

A royal banquet is the biggest danger-zone of them all, riddled with potential gaffes and errors. <\/p>\n

Even cocktail parties can provide difficulties. \u2018Always keep your glass in your left hand,\u2019 says Jean, \u2018so your right hand is free for shaking.\u2019 And when it comes to canapes? \u2018Some people find it easier not to bother.\u2019 No wonder Kate has got so thin. <\/p>\n

Of course, at dinner, there are obvious rules \u2014 no mobile phones, no leaning over the table to grab bread. But, adds Jean: \u2018I\u2019m constantly horrified by the way people hold cutlery.\u2019<\/p>\n

\n\"Start<\/p>\n

Start from the outside: Table settings are an etiquette minefield<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

You must never put a finger against the top of your fork to guide it. And no one of blue blood would ever use their fork as a scoop. \u2018Even with peas,\u2019 she says, firmly. \u2018One just presses them onto the back. Or avoids them.\u2019<\/p>\n

I\u2019m feeling fairly smug, until she talks me through the uses of a forest of glasses and adds: \u2018Of course, you never, ever, hold your glass out for a refill.\u2019 <\/p>\n

Oops. Princesses don\u2019t drink much, apparently. <\/p>\n

If you are dining with the Queen, you wait for her to begin. And if you are taking tea with her, \u2018the Queen always pours\u2019, confides Jean. So don\u2019t say \u2018Shall I be Mother?\u2019 and grab the pot.<\/p>\n

LESSON FIVE: Coat Management <\/h2>\n

Never have I given any thought to how I remove my coat. <\/p>\n

\u2018No,\u2019 Jean sighs, when I demonstrate my method. \u2018You see, you\u2019re dangling it all over the floor.\u2019 <\/p>\n

Although I assume that for Kate a footman will be on hand to help her, it\u2019s a useful skill.<\/p>\n

\u2018Put in one arm and pull the collar right up to your neck,\u2019 Jean says. \u2018Then when you reach behind, the other sleeve will be in exactly the right place.\u2019<\/p>\n

She\u2019s right. Her taking-off advice is even better.<\/p>\n

\u2018Push the coat a little way off your shoulders,\u2019 she says. \u2018Now, reach behind you and grasp the cuff of the left sleeve in your right hand. You take it off, bring the coat round to the front, take both cuffs in your left hand, and then reach through the arms to the collar.\u2019<\/p>\n

It\u2019s simpler than it sounds. I wonder if Kate knows about this? <\/p>\n

LESSON SIX: Getting In And Out Of A Car <\/h2>\n

Astonishing numbers of celebrities have come adrift trying to enter and exit cars elegantly.<\/p>\n

Former PM\u2019s wife Sarah Brown admits she whacked her head the first time she got into the PM\u2019s limo, while knicker-flashing starlets are ten a penny. That\u2019s because they haven\u2019t learnt the princess rule \u2014 always enter the car bottom first, so you can slide in backwards. <\/p>\n

\n\"This<\/p>\n

This is how it’s done Britney: Getting out of a car<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Getting out of a normal car is a matter of swinging your legs to the side and stepping out.<\/p>\n

\u2018But in a\u00a0 big, chauffeur-driven car, such as a Bentley, the mistake people make is to step forward first,\u2019 Jean explains. Instead, you remain seated, swing both legs to the side and exit on the diagonal. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Worst of all is the sports car. \u2018Hold lightly onto the top of the car as you get in and out,\u2019 says Jean, \u2018that way, you won\u2019t bump your head.\u2019 <\/p>\n

Thank goodness I\u2019ll never need to worry about all this. Kate has just a few weeks to crack all this and more. She may be the envy of every woman in the country, but I can\u2019t help but feel very sorry for her indeed.<\/p>\n
