{"id":287436,"date":"2011-03-03T01:51:24","date_gmt":"2011-03-03T01:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/03\/fewer-obese-in-canada-than-us\/"},"modified":"2011-03-03T01:51:24","modified_gmt":"2011-03-03T01:51:24","slug":"fewer-obese-in-canada-than-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/03\/fewer-obese-in-canada-than-us\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Fewer obese&#8217; in Canada than US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"66.937960688\">\n        \t\t  <span><br \/>\n    <span>2 March 2011<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Last updated at <\/span><span>20:51 ET<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Canada has a significantly lower rate of obesity than does the US, a new US government study has shown.<\/p>\n<p>More than a third of Americans are obese, compared to about a quarter of Canadians, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has concluded.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/databriefs\/db56.htm#changes\">study<\/a> found that both countries&#8217; obesity rates have grown significantly in the past two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Co-author Cynthia Ogden said the reasons for the difference were unclear and called for further investigation.<\/p>\n<p>In the study of data collected 2007-2009, the US agency attributed a small portion of the difference to the much larger percentage of black and Hispanic people in the US, since both demographics are more prone to obesity.<\/p>\n<p>When comparing only the non-Hispanic white populations of the two countries, 25.6% of Canadians were obese, compared with 33% for the US. Over the whole population, the figures were 24.1% and 34.4%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Obesity is determined using body mass index, which compares a person&#8217;s weight and height.<\/p>\n<p>A BMI of 30 or above is considered obese.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC has written that US society encourages obesity by promoting overeating, poor diet and physical inactivity, and has described childhood obesity as an epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>Obesity has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, high blood pressure and a litany of other ailments.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Continued here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/world-us-canada-12630023\" title=\"'Fewer obese' in Canada than US\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;Fewer obese&#8217; in Canada than US<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 2 March 2011 Last updated at 20:51 ET Canada has a significantly lower rate of obesity than does the US, a new US government study has shown.
