{"id":287289,"date":"2011-03-02T19:42:11","date_gmt":"2011-03-02T19:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/02\/cote-divoire-militia-trap-families-in-abidjan-church\/"},"modified":"2011-03-02T19:42:11","modified_gmt":"2011-03-02T19:42:11","slug":"cote-divoire-militia-trap-families-in-abidjan-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/02\/cote-divoire-militia-trap-families-in-abidjan-church\/","title":{"rendered":"C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire: Militia Trap Families in Abidjan Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"92.0064377682\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/><!-- close google_banner_mid div ---><\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipsnews.net\/africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/3a2a6559ips180.jpg\" alt=\"Inter Press Service (Johannesburg)\" title=\"Visit Inter Press Service (Johannesburg)\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p><!-- begin story layout piece here --><\/p>\n<p> 2 March 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Abidjan \u2014 Armed men have blocked some 60 families without food or water from leaving a church in Cote d&#8217;Ivoire&#8217;s commercial city, the U.N. says.<\/p>\n<p>One man who escaped the violence-plagued neighbourhood in Abidjan&#8217;s Abobo district described &#8220;fleeing the smell of the dead&#8221;, the U.N. said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The developments follow days of violence which have seen youthful supporters of Laurent Gbagbo, the country&#8217;s embattled leader, rampaging through Abidjan, pillaging shops owned by foreigners.<\/p>\n<p><!-- close google_inset_a div ---><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are reports of many dead bodies, buses burned and shops looted, and of young militiamen attacking people inside their homes,&#8221; the U.N. refugee agency said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>One man, Jean Bleou, said Abobo was quickly becoming uninhabitable.<\/p>\n<p>Several dozen people have been killed over the past week in clashes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I saw at least seven bodies on my way out,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We were fleeing the smell of the dead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gbagbo has refused to cede power three months after the U.N. said Alassane Ouattara won November&#8217;s election.<\/p>\n<p>The standoff has claimed the lives of hundreds of Ouattara supporters, victims of targeted assassinations and &#8220;disappearances&#8221; carried out at night by security forces loyal to Gbagbo.<\/p>\n<p>The conflict has reached a new level of intensity as commandos allied with Ouattara infiltrated Abobo.<\/p>\n<p><!-- close google_inset_b div ---><\/p>\n<p>They struck back, killing police and transforming the nature of the conflict from one pitting the police against unarmed demonstrators to one between two armed forces.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, hundreds of government employees lined up in front of local banks in Abidjan to receive their paychecks.<\/p>\n<p>A teacher, Marcelin Gnahe, said he received his full pay of about 500 dollars but was worried about the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s like someone has put a bag over your head and sealed it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The regional central bank headquartered in Senegal has frozen Gbagbo&#8217;s access to state accounts, making it hard for him to continue paying civil servants.<\/p>\n<p>Major international banks have shut their operations in Ivory Coast amid the uncertainty, prompting panic among customers.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple delegations of African leaders have come through Abidjan, Ivory Coast&#8217;s commercial hub, in an attempt to persuade Gbagbo to leave office.<\/p>\n<p>Gbagbo has rejected all their proposals, including offers of amnesty and a comfortable exile abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Opponents are trying to strangle his administration financially, and the European Union has prohibited European ships from docking in its port.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the government said on Tuesday it would ban residents from filling jerrycans with fuel as fears of a shortage grow.<\/p>\n<p>Motorists in Abidjan rushed to fill up their car&#8217;s tanks, then went home to siphon the fuel into jerrycans, in an effort to stockpile.
