Hiring is modest. Wages are barely rising. The housing market is still struggling.<\/p>\n<p>But the economy is expanding at a&#8221;modest to moderate pace&#8221;, the Federal Reserve said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- REAP --><!--startclickprintexclude--><!--endclickprintexclude--><!-- \/REAP --><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the picture from the Fed&#8217;s Beige Book report released Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Retailers and manufacturers across all 12 of the Federal Reserve&#8217;s districts said they&#8217;re seeing higher input costs. That&#8217;s no surprise given surging prices on everything from oil to food lately.<\/p>\n<p>But while they told the Fed they&#8217;re already passing on some of those costs to customers, homebuilders &#8212; especially in the Cleveland and Atlanta districts &#8212; are not, most likely due to the troubled housing market. <\/p>\n<p>Both commercial and residential construction continues to be one of the slower segments of the economy, while manufacturers, retailers and financial firms reported slight growth.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, it&#8217;s still tough to get credit, and in some regions, banks are actually tightening their standards.<\/p>\n<p>The Fed reported little evidence of wages increasing in most of its districts.<\/p>\n<p>The report echoes recent comments from <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/03\/01\/news\/economy\/bernanke_senate_testimony\/index.htm\">Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke<\/a>, who acknowledges rising prices are impacting the average American, but not yet at a level that will derail the recovery.<\/p>\n<p>The Beige Book summarizes economic conditions in the central bank&#8217;s 12 districts across the nation, and is released eight times a year.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/03\/02\/news\/economy\/federal_reserve_beige_book\/index.htm?section=money_topstories&#038;utm_source=feedburner&#038;utm_medium=feed&#038;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+rss%2Fmoney_topstories+%28Top+Stories%29#TOP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.cdn.turner.com\/money\/images\/bug.gif\" alt=\"To top of page\" border=\"0\" width=\"7\" height=\"7\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/CONTENT --><!--startclickprintexclude--><!--startclickprintexclude--><br \/>\n<!--endclickprintexclude--><\/p>\n<p>First Published: March 2, 2011: 2:36 PM ET<\/p>\n<p><!--endclickprintexclude--><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>See the article here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/rss.cnn.com\/~r\/rss\/money_topstories\/~3\/yfJc4pqLVt4\/index.htm\" title=\"Federal Reserve sees prices rising\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Federal Reserve sees prices rising<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> By Annalyn Censky, staff reporter March 2, 2011: 2:56 PM ET NEW YORK (CNNMoney) &#8212; Businesses are passing on surging costs to consumers.
