{"id":286803,"date":"2011-03-02T14:58:38","date_gmt":"2011-03-02T14:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/03\/02\/banks-inducted-into-hall-of-fame\/"},"modified":"2011-03-02T14:58:38","modified_gmt":"2011-03-02T14:58:38","slug":"banks-inducted-into-hall-of-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/03\/02\/banks-inducted-into-hall-of-fame\/","title":{"rendered":"Banks inducted into Hall of Fame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div>\n                        <!-- S BO --><br \/>\n<!-- S IIMA --><\/p>\n<div readability=\"7\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/bc42a0f066_imag03971.jpg\" width=\"466\" height=\"260\" alt=\"Phil Sproson (l) and Gordon Banks\" border=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Roy Sproson&#8217;s nephew Phil (l) and Gordon Banks attended the ceremony<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t<br clear=\"all\" \/><!-- E IIMA --><!-- S SF --><\/p>\n<p><b>England&#8217;s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks has been inducted into the City of Stoke-on-Trent Hall of Fame.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Banks won the League Cup with Stoke City in 1972 and is regarded as one of England&#8217;s greatest ever goalkeepers. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m very proud indeed,&#8221; Banks told BBC Radio Stoke. &#8220;To be honoured in this way after all these years is a wonderful achievement.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Legendary Port Vale defender Roy Sproson was also inducted into the Hall of Fame at the ceremony on Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p><!-- E SF --><\/p>\n<p>Banks, 73, joined Stoke from Leicester City for \u00a352,000 in 1967, a year after winning the World Cup with England.<\/p>\n<p><!-- S IIMA --><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"226\" cellpadding=\"0\" readability=\"1\">\n<tr readability=\"2\">\n<td readability=\"4\">\n<div readability=\"7\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/cfe1ab14320_33632541.jpg\" width=\"226\" height=\"170\" alt=\"Gordon Banks\" border=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gordon Banks played 246 games for Stoke and won 73 England caps<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><!-- E IIMA --><\/p>\n<p>In all, he made 246 appearances in five years with the Potters, before losing the sight in his right eye in a car accident, which prematurely ended his playing career in England. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was great to receive things when I played professional football,&#8221; continued Banks, who is currently the president of Stoke City. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You don&#8217;t know what&#8217;s going to happen when you turn professional, whether you&#8217;re going to be a success or a failure. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was fortunate enough to play in some good teams that got us success and then I got introduced into the national team. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then playing in the World Cup and winning the World Cup was like a dream come true really. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s fantastic for the family, these are the things they will remember, but for me as an individual it&#8217;s another wonderful honour for me.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Sproson, who died in 1997 at the age of 66, made a club record 837 appearances in a 22-year playing career at Vale and also spent four years as manager at Vale Park.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Inline Embbeded Media --><\/p>\n<p><!--  This is the embedded player component --><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div readability=\"7\">\n<p><strong>Please turn on JavaScript.<\/strong> Media requires JavaScript to play. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t<!-- embedding script --><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- end of the embedded player component --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END of Inline Embedded Media --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If Roy had been with us, he would have been immensely proud,&#8221; Roy&#8217;s nephew Phil, who played almost 500 games for Port Vale, said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a special day for the family because it&#8217;s not every day you get something like this. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great for the Port Vale side of Stoke-on-Trent because, for a long time, Vale have had to live in the shadow of Stoke City. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But at times we&#8217;ve come to the surface and shown what we&#8217;re made of. It&#8217;s great to have recognition.
