Futures measure current index values against perceived future performance.<\/p>\n<p><!-- REAP --><!--startclickprintexclude--><!--endclickprintexclude--><!-- \/REAP --><\/p>\n<p>Despite a slight step back last week, stocks <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/02\/28\/markets\/markets_newyork\/index.htm\">closed out February<\/a> on an upbeat note &#8212; posting their third straight month of gains. Overall, all three major indexes were up nearly 3% during the month, and have risen more than 5% since the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Stocks have been supported this year by a combination of improving economic news and strong corporate earnings. But some traders are concerned that <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/02\/28\/news\/economy\/thebuzz\/index.htm\">a jump in energy costs<\/a> could hurt the economy, as the recent turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa boosts oil prices. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, investors are looking ahead to the <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/02\/26\/markets\/sunday_lookahead\/index.htm\">government&#8217;s monthly payroll report<\/a> on Friday, which will reveal how many jobs were created in February.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/news\/economy\/index.html\"><b>Economy:<\/b><\/a> The Institute for Supply Management will release its manufacturing index at 10 a.m. ET. It&#8217;s expected to fall slightly to 60.5. <\/p>\n<p>Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke is due to give his semi-annual testimony to the Senate Banking Committee. <\/p>\n<p>Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is scheduled to testify before the House Financial Services Committee, on the administration&#8217;s plan for reforming America&#8217;s housing finance market.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/news\/companies\/\"><b>Companies<\/b><\/a>: Ford (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=F&#038;source=story_quote_link\">F<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2010\/snapshots\/160.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>), General Motors (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=GM&#038;source=story_quote_link\">GM<\/a>), Toyota (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=TM&#038;source=story_quote_link\">TM<\/a>) and other automakers release their February sales figures starting at around 11 a.m. ET.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/world_markets\/europe\/\"><b>World markets:<\/b><\/a> European stocks rose in morning trading. Britain&#8217;s FTSE 100 ticked up 0.3%, the DAX in Germany advanced 0.7% and France&#8217;s CAC 40 edged higher 0.4%.<\/p>\n<p>Asian markets ended the session higher. The Shanghai Composite rose 0.5%, the Hang Seng in Hong Kong added 0.2% and Japan&#8217;s Nikkei jumped 1.2%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/currencies\/index.html\"><b>Currencies<\/b><\/a><b> and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/commodities\/index.html\">commodities:<\/a><\/b> The dollar fell against the euro and the British pound, but was firm versus the Japanese yen.<\/p>\n<p>Oil for April delivery gained 38 cents to $97.34 a barrel. <\/p>\n<p>Gold futures for April delivery rose $9.50 to $1,418.90 an ounce. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/bonds\/index.html\"><b>Bonds<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b> The price on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury rose, pushing the yield down to 3.41% from 3.43% late Monday. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/03\/01\/markets\/premarkets\/index.htm?section=money_topstories&#038;utm_source=feedburner&#038;utm_medium=feed&#038;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+rss%2Fmoney_topstories+%28Top+Stories%29#TOP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.cdn.turner.com\/money\/images\/bug.gif\" alt=\"To top of page\" border=\"0\" width=\"7\" height=\"7\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/CONTENT --><!--startclickprintexclude--><!--startclickprintexclude--><br \/>\n<!--endclickprintexclude--><!--endclickprintexclude--><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/060c8f10futures.top_-150x150.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>See the article here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/rss.cnn.com\/~r\/rss\/money_topstories\/~3\/IrUWhjFRq_4\/index.htm\" title=\"Stocks look to start March with gains\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stocks look to start March with gains<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Click the chart for more premarket data.
