{"id":284701,"date":"2011-02-28T16:05:55","date_gmt":"2011-02-28T16:05:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/02\/28\/vietnamese-face-more-price-hikes\/"},"modified":"2011-02-28T16:05:55","modified_gmt":"2011-02-28T16:05:55","slug":"vietnamese-face-more-price-hikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/02\/28\/vietnamese-face-more-price-hikes\/","title":{"rendered":"Vietnamese face more price hikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"102.806031746\">\n        \t\t  <span><br \/>\n    <span>28 February 2011<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Last updated at <\/span><span>11:05 ET<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Vietnam&#8217;s government is set to raise electricity prices by 15% on Tuesday, at a time when the population is already struggling with a soaring cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>Last week the Vietnamese government also raised the retail prices of oil products by as much as 24%.<\/p>\n<p>In February, inflation hit a two-year high of 12.31%.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts say despite the government&#8217;s measures to tighten monetary policy, price pressures are likely to continue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The increases in energy, electricity and petroleum indicate that we are going to see inflation get a little worse despite the shift in government policy,&#8221; said Christian de Guzman of Moody&#8217;s Investor Group.<\/p>\n<p>  <span>Overheating<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For years the Vietnamese government has kept a loose interest rate policy and subsidized lending in order to boost growth.<\/p>\n<p>The government expects the economy to expand as much as 7.5%, up from 6.8% in 2010.<\/p>\n<div readability=\"24.5933333333\">\n\t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-12593714#story_continues_2\">Continue reading the main story<\/a>\t<\/p>\n<h2>\u201c<span>Start Quote<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote readability=\"5\">\n<p>&#8220;The Vietnamese government was focussed on growth at all costs\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>End Quote<\/span><br \/>\n\t<span>Christian de Guzman<\/span><br \/>\n\t<span>Moody&#8217;s<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>But the cost of that rapid pace is that the economy has started to show signs of overheating.<\/p>\n<p>Credit rating agencies cut the country&#8217;s sovereign-credit rating last year.<\/p>\n<p>Inflation fears have also caused a sell-off in Vietnamese markets.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam&#8217;s benchmark stock index has slid 6.7% in the past year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Vietnamese government was focused on growth at all costs,&#8221; said Mr de Guzman.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By the middle of last year they had already reached their inflation target but then they continued to pursue other macroeconomic policy targets like credit growth and gross domestic product growth,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>  <span>Fighting inflation<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But since the beginning of this year, the government seems to have shifted its policies towards stabilizing prices. <\/p>\n<p>Last week the Vietnamese government announced a set of measures to curb inflation.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank recently raised the cost of borrowing.<\/p>\n<p>It increased the benchmark refinance rate by 2 percentage points from 9% to 11%.<\/p>\n<p>The government has also vowed to reduce government debt.<\/p>\n<p>To that effect, it cut the budget-deficit target to less than 5% of gross domestic product, from 5.3%.<\/p>\n<p>Reducing government spending on subsidies for fuel and electricity are also part of that plan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In order to stave off inflation, they want to cut back on subsidies.
