Ashley accidentally shot Tom Cowan, 21, in the side while dicking about with a .22 air rifle brought into the training ground. He left the student in agony with blood pouring from his wound \u2013 and experts said he was lucky to be alive. Tom was only standing 5ft away from Ashley when the accident happened last Sunday and was allowed two days off. How generous. <\/p>\n
Tom has since been called into a three-hour meeting with \u00adofficials, with the club reportedly going into \u201clockdown\u201d to prevent details spilling out.<\/p>\n
Ashley was fined \u00a3250,000 (two weeks wages) by bosses, but now he is facing a police \u00adinvestigation. A serious police spokesman said: \u201cWhile no direct \u00adallegation has been made to Surrey Police the matter has been brought to our attention through reports in the media.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will be contacting the club to establish if any criminal offences having been committed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ashley is thought to have apologised after getting a bollocking from bosses and said he didn\u2019t know the gun was loaded.<\/p>\n
Some legal stuff? Sure! Anyone found guilty of assault with an air rifle could face up to five years in jail. But a \u00adconviction could only be secured if it was proved the person shooting it meant harm.<\/p>\n
The serious police source said: \u201cIf there was an obvious risk of danger resulting from the actions, then that is termed recklessness and an offence of assault has been committed.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut without co-operation from the victim it would be very unlikely that the CPS would be able to bring a successful charge.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chelsea said: \u201cWe have fully investigated and we are taking appropriate action.\u201d<\/p>\n
