{"id":283790,"date":"2011-02-28T01:57:04","date_gmt":"2011-02-28T01:57:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/02\/28\/uk-product-placement-ban-lifted\/"},"modified":"2011-02-28T01:57:04","modified_gmt":"2011-02-28T01:57:04","slug":"uk-product-placement-ban-lifted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/02\/28\/uk-product-placement-ban-lifted\/","title":{"rendered":"UK product placement ban lifted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"67.2627235213\">\n        \t\t  <span><br \/>\n    <span>27 February 2011<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Last updated at <\/span><span>20:57 ET<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A ban on product placement has been lifted, allowing advertisers to pay for their goods to be seen on British TV. <\/p>\n<p>Paid-for references to products and services are now permitted for the first time in shows produced in the UK, including soaps and one-off dramas.<\/p>\n<p>The first product will be a Nescafe coffee machine on ITV1&#8217;s This Morning. <\/p>\n<p>The Church of England and doctors&#8217; leaders have opposed the move, saying it could damage trust in broadcasters and promote unhealthy lifestyles.<\/p>\n<p>Under <a href=\"http:\/\/consumers.ofcom.org.uk\/2011\/02\/product-placement-on-tv\/\" title=\"Ofcom regulations\">Ofcom regulations,<\/a> broadcasters must inform viewers by displaying the letter &#8216;P&#8217; for three seconds at the start and end of a programme that contains product placement. <\/p>\n<p>The telecoms regulator has said any placement must be editorially justified and not unduly prominent. <\/p>\n<p>It will not be allowed in news, current affairs or children&#8217;s programmes &#8211; or for alcoholic drinks and foods high in salt, sugar and fat.<\/p>\n<div>\n\t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-12593061#story_continues_2\">Continue reading the main story<\/a>\t\t<!-- pullout-items--><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- pullout-body--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> No paid product placements on BBC, children&#8217;s, news, current affairs, consumer affairs and religious programmes<\/li>\n<li> Banned products include gambling services; food and drink high in salt, fat and sugar; tobacco; medicines; alcohol; baby milk; weapons; and escort services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- pullout-links--><\/div>\n<p>And it will continue to be banned for BBC shows.<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, advertisers such as Coca-Cola and Apple pay millions of dollars to place their products in films and TV programmes. <\/p>\n<p>When the European Union lifted its ban on such payments, there was heated debate over whether it should be allowed in productions made in the UK. <\/p>\n<p>Commercial broadcasters and independent producers argued it would help pay for programmes.<\/p>\n<p>But Church leaders were among those who said it could damage trust and promote unhealthy lifestyles.<\/p>\n<p>The last Labour government eventually gave the go-ahead, but only after setting out strict limitations.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>See more here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/uk-12593061\" title=\"UK product placement ban lifted\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK product placement ban lifted<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 27 February 2011 Last updated at 20:57 ET A ban on product placement has been lifted, allowing advertisers to pay for their goods to be seen on British TV.
