FORMER Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili, has expressed worries about the level of money politics in the country, urging the electorate to beware of those who entice them with cash for vote.<\/p>\n

Speaking at Obosi in Idemili North local government area, during an empowerment programme for about 100 widows in the community, Akunyili, who is the senatorial candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, for Anambra Central, urged the people to realize that politicians who gave them money were merely buying their votes, adding that once such people got what they wanted, they would turn back on the people.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cMoney politics is frustrating. The kind of money people distribute for the April 2011 campaigns is alarming. I usually ask people to collect such monies if they are given because it is money that would have been used to provide amenities for them, which politicians fail to utilize and only come around during electioneering to share them to the people.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me as a contestant for Anambra Central senatorial seat, my concern is how to let the people know that I am somebody they can trust. I am happy that most of them are getting the message which gladdens our hearts, although some of them still say that it would have been easier for me if I share money like others.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to her, the dangerous thing about money politics is that it could throw up somebody who does mean well for the people.<\/p>\n

She commended the initiator of the women empowerment programme, Mrs. Ebele Ejikeme who is the APGA candidate for the House of Assembly for Idemili North for taking care of widows in the area since the past 10 years.<\/p>\n

She explained that such assistance to the widows and other less privileged in the society would be expanded to cover many other communities in the state, adding that it is therefore necessary for the electorate to return the candidates of the party at all levels during the election for the programme to be sustained.<\/p>\n
