Newcastle were left to settle for a point against Bolton after losing Ryan Taylor to a second-half dismissal.<\/b><\/p>\n

The hosts had dominated after Kevin Nolan headed in Cheik Tiote’s swirling cross on 13 minutes with Leon Best close to a second on several occasions. <\/p>\n

But Daniel Sturridge fired home from the edge of the area, scoring his fourth goal in four games to level. <\/p>\n

Taylor’s lunge on Johan Elmander handed Bolton the initiative, but they rarely looked like making it count. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The result does little for either side’s hopes of Europa League qualification but both will perhaps be content to move even further away from the relegation zone. <\/p>\n

After four wins in their last five matches and, with Sturridge available after missing the FA Cup wins over Wigan and Fulham, a confident Bolton played a full part in an entertaining opening. <\/p>\n

Sturridge saw an ambitious 40-yard lob sail over the top before Stuart Holden’s close-range attempt was blocked by Mike Williamson. <\/p>\n

But Newcastle looked just as threatening and their opener subdued the visitors.<\/p>\n

Best had already gone close with a low curling shot before Peter Lovenkrands’ improvised flick brought a good save from Jussi Jaaskelainen. <\/p>\n

The resulting corner was over hit but Tiote rescued the stray ball and produced a far better delivery for Nolan to guide a glancing header low past Jaaskelainen. <\/p>\n

Newcastle could easily have doubled the lead with Best a constant threat. <\/p>\n

The Republic of Ireland striker latched onto Nolan’s pass and appeared to be caught by the covering Paul Robinson as he bore down on goal but his appeals were cut short by a late offside flag. <\/p>\n

Best was then denied by David Wheater’s unwitting block as Jaaskelainen spilled Jose Enrique’s wicked cross before heading narrowly over. <\/p>\n

A tame snap-shot from Elmander was all Bolton had produced in response but, afforded the briefest sight of goal, Sturridge pulled them level against the run of play. <\/p>\n

Fabio Coloccini and Tiote’s attempts to play their way out of defence were disrupted by Elmander and Sturridge controlled his strike-partner’s pass before sweeping a low shot past Steve Harper from 18 yards. <\/p>\n

Newcastle continued to press as Jose Enrique’s dangerous raids from left-back became more frequent but they returned to the dressing room without the lead their first-half performance had merited. <\/p>\n

Enrique continued to torment Robinson after the interval and called Jaaskelainen into action before Ryan Taylor’s dismissal dented Newcastle’s chances.<\/p>\n

The midfielder, who was called into the line-up after the late withdrawal of Joey Barton, had his first Premier League start of the season brought to an early end after he threw himself two-footed into a 50-50 challenge with Elmander. <\/p>\n

With Martin Petrov and Holden revelling in the increased time and space afforded in Newcastle’s midfield, Bolton looked increasingly likely winners. <\/p>\n

Kevin Davies came close to making telling contact with a Marcos Alonso cross before Nolan’s attempt to clear Petrov’s shot only just made it over his own crossbar. <\/p>\n

Magpies boss Alan Pardew introduced defender Steve Taylor at the expense of winger Jonas Gutierrez as he attempted to tighten Newcastle’s hold onto at least a point. <\/p>\n

The change seemed to have the desired effect with Elmander blazing over as the visitors worked a rare clear opening. <\/p>\n

Bolton manager Owen Coyle made his own change – introducing Mark Davies for Fabrice Muamba – as he searched for greater penetration. <\/p>\n

But instead Newcastle almost defied their numerical disadvantage to steal victory with a late rally. <\/p>\n

Robinson’s chested back pass from Best’s sharp cross almost escaped Jaskelainen before referee Chris Foy waved away late claims for a penalty for a foul on Shefki Kuqi. <\/p>\n

Ranger, still searching for his first league goal, had the ball in the net before the end but officialdom intervened again as his header was ruled offside. <\/p>\n
