{"id":283116,"date":"2011-02-27T12:08:04","date_gmt":"2011-02-27T12:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/02\/27\/un-security-council-slams-sanctions-on-gaddafi-associates\/"},"modified":"2011-02-27T12:08:04","modified_gmt":"2011-02-27T12:08:04","slug":"un-security-council-slams-sanctions-on-gaddafi-associates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/02\/27\/un-security-council-slams-sanctions-on-gaddafi-associates\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Security Council slams sanctions on Gaddafi, associates"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"93.7854098772\">\n<p>The UN Security Council, Saturday in New York imposed sanctions on Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi, his five children and 10 top associates.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The Resolution 1970 imposing sanctions on the Libyan regime was adopted unanimously after a day-long discussions.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The council imposed an asset freeze on Gaddafi, his four sons and daughter and a travel ban on the entire family.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The 15-member council also slammed sanctions on 10 of his close associates.<\/p>\n<p>The Council also imposed a complete arms embargo and agreed to refer the regime\u2019s lethal attack on anti-government protesters to the International Criminal Court.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The Council did not consider earlier suggestions by Libyan diplomats at the UN, requesting an imposition of a no-fly zone over Libya.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The council also did not consider the idea of UN backed military action in the North African country as was suggested.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Council members believed that the full implementation of the sanctions would swiftly and effectively address the ongoing crisis in Libya.<\/p>\n<p>The UN estimates more than 1,000 people have died as Gaddafi\u2019s regime attempted to quell the 10-day-old revolt against his repressive regime, in different cities across Libya .<\/p>\n<p>Gaddafi\u2019s regime has been accused of recruiting African machineries, from neighbouring states, to attack his countrymen.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Nigeria\u2019s ambassador to the UN Joy Ogwu said Nigeria supported the package of sanctions in the resolution because the \u201cimpact was targeted and does not exacerbate the burden on Libya citizens.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cNigeria is deeply concerned about the escalating violence, the inflammatory rhetoric and the deplorable loss of lives in Libya.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is therefore fitting that the Security Council has taken decisive action today to address the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigeria is satisfied that the resolution provides for the protection of civilians and respects for international, humanitarian and human rights law,\u2019\u2019 she said.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>She noted that Nigeria in reaching its decision took into consideration the letter received by the Permanent representative of Libya supporting the measures proposed in the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>The Libyan mission to the UN, had informed the council in a letter that it supported measures \u201cto hold those responsible to account for the armed attacks against the Libyan civilians, including through the International Criminal Court\u201d.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The letter was signed by Amb.Mohamed Shalgham, a former ally of Gadhafi, who denounced him on Friday for masterminding the bloodshed in the country.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>In his remarks to the Security Council, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said the \u201cresolutions sends a strong message that gross violations of basic human rights will not be tolerated, and that those responsible for grave crimes will be held accountable.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cI hope the message is heard, and heeded, by the regime in Libya. I hope it will also bring hope and relief to those still at risk.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cThe sanctions you have imposed are a necessary step to speed the transition to a new system of governance that will have the consent and participation of the people,\u2019\u2019 the secretary-general said.<\/p>\n<p>In Geneva on Friday, the UN Human Rights Council called for an investigation into possible crimes against humanity in Libya.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>It also recommended Libya\u2019s suspension from membership of the organisation\u2019s top human rights body.<\/p>\n<p>The African group at the Human Rights Council is however opposed to the suspension of Libya from the 47-member council, although it condemned the violence perpetrated by the Gaddafi regime.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>A statement presented by Nigeria on behalf of the Group condemned what it called the \u201camalgam created by different media, qualifying Africans livings in Libya as mercenaries\u201d.\u2019<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The group warned that such presentation has \u201cjeopardised the lives of these African nationals living the country\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Comments are moderated.
