MICHAEL OFOSU Frimpong, a trader, yesterday alleged at an Accra circuit court that some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) attempted to bribe him over the Amina Mohammed case.<\/p>\n
The young man, who had earlier spoken on Adom FM in Tema and Great FM in Accra, claiming he was on the Yutong bus that was attacked at Kubease near Ejisu in the Ashanti region when the alleged mass rape occurred, added that he was persuaded by Adom FM to add some information to Amina\u2019s claim to make the information credible.<\/p>\n
The prosecution witness, who is also standing trial at a different court on a charge of causing fear and panic, claimed that Professor Ken Attafuah and Andy Appiah-Kubi, both lawyers of Amina, the lady at the centre of the controversy, took him to the NPP headquarters at Asylum Down, Accra where he met some party officials.<\/p>\n
According to him, three NPP bigwigs: Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, Kennedy Agyapong and Yaw Osafo-Marfo, in a meeting at NPP Headquarters, promised him GH\u00a290,000 if he helped clear Amina and Adom FM, after they showed him a lot of money which scared him.<\/p>\n
Frimpong, who is currently in police custody, said the NPP officials saw it as an opportunity because they said the ruling NDC government promised Ghanaians that they would reduce armed robbery in the country but had failed to do so.<\/p>\n
Because he was afraid, he informed his pastor who advised him not to tread that path and that he (pastor) was aware of a similar incident in which the person testified but did not reach home with the money when he was attacked.<\/p>\n
The proceedings at a point became dramatic when defence and prosecution clashed over the allegations.<\/p>\n
Prof. Attafuah, a criminologist, who was in court when these allegations were being made, became very emotional and even wanted to leave the courtroom. He later returned and apologized to the court, saying that he was very surprised about what the state was throwing out to the public.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy Lord, I am so shocked because it is a deceitful statement and I\u2019m embarrassed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Just as he finished with his comment, Paul Abariga, the state attorney, responded that it was wrong for Prof Attafuah to say that. \u201cThey don\u2019t have to come and say the evidence was orchestrated by the state, he Mr. Attafuah, as human rights activist is part.<\/p>\n
Attafuah: \u201cBut this is shocking.\u201d<\/p>\n
Abariga: It is shocking because you did not know it would come out.<\/p>\n
Attafuah: How dare you?
When tempers appeared to be going up, the judge, Mrs. Patience Mills-Tetteh, intervened and asked them not to be emotional about the issues because it was just a legal exercise.<\/p>\n
However, Abariga said it would amount to procedural error if it was not controlled.<\/p>\n
Frimpong, led in evidence by Mr. Abariga, narrated that on October 11, 2010, he was on board an OA bus travelling to Tamale to sell goods.<\/p>\n
On reaching Kintampo, the driver stopped and later, the Yutong bus Amina was traveling on also stopped at the same junction.<\/p>\n
The Yutong driver came to inform his driver that God had saved him from a robbery attack. After some discussion, he said his driver continued the journey to Tamale.<\/p>\n
He narrated that he returned to Accra three days later and met a friend by name Charles Adu.<\/p>\n
His friend asked him if he had heard of a mass rape incident on a bus on the Tamale road and he said yes. Because Charles also had a friend at Nhyira FM, he (Charles) managed to link him to Adom FM, where the story was first aired.<\/p>\n
He said on that day, which was a Monday, Adakabre Frimpong-Manso, host of Adom FM\u2019s morning show, and Kennedy Agyapong, a panelist, were having discussion on the matter and he was made to confirm the story of Amina.<\/p>\n
He explained that before he went on air, he told Adakabre that there was no such incident but the host asked him to listen to a recorded voice of Amina and add some information to it, which he obliged.<\/p>\n
After the programme, Frimpong claimed he was given Lawyer Appiah-Kubi\u2019s number to call and he obliged in the presence of Cox Tamakloe, a director at Adom FM, who later helped him to locate the lawyer at Heward Mills Chambers at New Town.<\/p>\n
According to him, Mr. Appiah-Kubi, after he told him everything, asked him to help Amina and Adom FM and that they would also help him in other ways.<\/p>\n
He indicated that he did not agree to it immediately but slept over the issue.<\/p>\n
He was then taken to Nima Police station where he met Prof Ken Attafuah, who introduced Amina to him.<\/p>\n
It was from there that he was sent to the NPP headquarters.<\/p>\n
Again, he alleged that Mr. Appiah-Kubi took him to different places and finally to Multi-TV where he was abandoned.<\/p>\n
After waiting till 7pm without seeing Mr. Appiah-Kubi, he left the place. Frimpong said he gave a statement to the police.<\/p>\n
Under-cross examination by Mr. Appiah-Kubi, the witness said he went to Adom FM basically to tell them what he knew about the incident.<\/p>\n
Frimpong admitted confirming the issue of mass rape on Adom FM and also added that he first introduced himself to both lawyers as one of the passengers on the Amina bus when the incident occurred.<\/p>\n
Excerpts from the cross-examination<\/p>\n
Counsel: On what day did you meet Mr. Appiah-Kubi?<\/p>\n
Frimpong: It was a Tuesday at 10am last year but I can\u2019t remember the month and the date.<\/p>\n
Counsel: How did you go to the NPP Headquarters?<\/p>\n
Frimpong: I went with Mr. Appiah-Kubi in his new unregistered car which looks like a jeep.<\/p>\n
Counsel: You were not motivated in anyway before you made those comments on air.<\/p>\n
Frimpong: Mr. Tamakloe told me that they would sponsor my flight on Antrak from Kumasi to Accra to testify for Amina.<\/p>\n
Counsel: Have you travelled on Antrak before?<\/p>\n
Frimpong: I have not travelled on Antrak before.<\/p>\n
Counsel: You are involved in a criminal matter.<\/p>\n
Frimpong: Yes
Counsel: Appiah-Kubi was your counsel and he secured bail for you and even went for a bail review for you at the high court.<\/p>\n
Frimpong: It is not true. I was alone in that case without counsel and Mr. Abariga, my prosecutor, is my witness.<\/p>\n
Counsel: Did you visit the psychiatric hospital three weeks ago?<\/p>\n
Frimpong: Yes. It was the circuit court one judge who gave that order.<\/p>\n
Counsel: You sent a letter to Mr. Appiah-Kubi.<\/p>\n
Frimpong: No. I gave a letter to the CID to be given to my wife.<\/p>\n
Counsel: And can you tell the court its content.<\/p>\n
Frimpong: My wife is pregnant. So I told her that she may not see me again. I asked her not to do anything to the pregnancy and that when she delivers, she should name the child after my mother. I told her when you are born a man, it is always a problem and death.<\/p>\n
Appiah Kubi: Did you tell Mr. Attafuah you were being tortured in cells?<\/p>\n
Frimpong: No I did not say so.<\/p>\n
Mr. Abariga had wanted Frimpong to tell the court what prompted him to write the letter but Mr. Appiah Kubi objected and the court obliged.<\/p>\n
The case has been adjourned to March 18 for more witnesses to testify.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
