{"id":282160,"date":"2011-02-25T18:52:52","date_gmt":"2011-02-25T18:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/02\/25\/progress-on-us-anti-union-bill\/"},"modified":"2011-02-25T18:52:52","modified_gmt":"2011-02-25T18:52:52","slug":"progress-on-us-anti-union-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/02\/25\/progress-on-us-anti-union-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Progress on US &#8216;anti-union&#8217; bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"58.1915509259\">\n        \t\t  <span><br \/>\n    <span>25 February 2011<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Last updated at <\/span><span>13:52 ET<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A controversial bill that would restrict the collective bargaining rights of public workers in Wisconsin has passed the state&#8217;s lower chamber, but political deadlock remains.<\/p>\n<p>Republican lawmakers voted the bill through the state Assembly late on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>But the bill cannot pass in the state Senate until absent Democrats return.<\/p>\n<p>Gov Scott Walker says the move is needed to help balance the recession-hit state budget.<\/p>\n<p>But tens of thousands of people have turned out every day to demonstrate against the curbs to union activity.<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen Democrats in the Senate remain in virtual hiding outside of the state, and until they return the chamber lacks a quorum for a vote.<\/p>\n<p>They say they will not return until Gov Walker agrees to negotiate the terms of the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Among its provisions, the bill would limit public workers&#8217; right to collective bargaining other than for base wages and require them to contribute more of their pay to their pensions and healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Walker says the bill is needed to repair the state&#8217;s $3.6bn (\u00a32.23bn) budget deficit expected in the next two-year fiscal period.<\/p>\n<p>The public employee bill is expected to save $300m in that period.<\/p>\n<p>But unions, who with their supporters remained massed at the state capitol for a ninth day on Thursday in protest against the bill, have agreed to the cuts to their compensation, and charge Mr Walker seeks to break the labour union movement in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Go here to see the original:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/world-us-canada-12584332\" title=\"Progress on US 'anti-union' bill\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Progress on US &#8216;anti-union&#8217; bill<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 25 February 2011 Last updated at 13:52 ET A controversial bill that would restrict the collective bargaining rights of public workers in Wisconsin has passed the state&#8217;s lower chamber, but political deadlock remains.
