A confident second half performance from Independiente got them off to a winning start in the Copa Libertadores Group Stages, as goals from Facundo Parra, Cristian Pellarano and Andres Silvera sealed a 3-0 triumph in the Rio de la Plata clasico against Pe\u00f1arol.<\/p>\n
Independiente took the field with a mix of first team players and reserves as coach Antonio Mohamed kept one eye on a key Primera clash with River Plate at the weekend. Nevertheless, it was the home side which forced the pace throughout the opening 45 minutes, the young double enganche pairing of Patricio Rodriguez and Matias Defederico continually probing the Pe\u00f1arol defence from deep. In contrast, the ‘Aurinegro’ began the encounter much more withdrawn, looking to damage their opponents from their own half on the break.<\/p>\n
This made for a cagey start to the game, as Independiente had great spells of possession around the area without being able to break the black and gold wall in front of them. ‘Pato’ Rodriguez had some of the best chances of the half, most notably with a run and shot which was covered by Fabian Carini in the away goal.<\/p>\n
Defederico was also a livewire, and deserved more from an excellent individual play. The former Corinthians player took the ball standing on the half hour and skipped past his marker, but from 20 meters out could not keep his shot from soaring over the crossbar. Meanwhile, Antonio Pacheco had the best opportunity of the half for the Uruguayans; picking up a loose ball in the area, the veteran forward also failed to keep his attempt down and Hilario Navarro watched it safely wide and high.<\/p>\n
As always in a clasico there was a fair amount of heavy tackling, and both teams were lucky to avoid red cards towards the end of the first period. Leonel Galeano performed a clumsy, hands-first hit on Jonathan Urretaviscaya which only provoked a booking from referee Savio Fagundes. Pe\u00f1arol’s Carlos Suarez meanwhile was even more fortunate to stay on the field; already-booked, the defender performed a cynical body check to take down Rodriguez in full flight, and Fagundes was surrounded by ‘Rojo’ players at half time furious that the Pe\u00f1arol man did not see red.<\/p>\n
After the deadlocked first half, it took Independiente only two minutes to get on the scoresheet following the break. A wonderful passage of one-touch football culminated in ‘Pato’ chipping the ball into the path of Facundo Parra, and the poacher did what he does best to divert the cross past Carini. The former Chacarita Juniors star was delighted with his strike, and it was the spur for the ‘Rojo’ to move up a gear as Galeano and Leandro Gracian had excellent chances to double the lead against the reeling visitors.<\/p>\n
Pe\u00f1arol were by no means sunk though, and Hilario had to pull off a solid save to deny Luis Aguiar following a flowing move from the ‘Manya’. Independiente started to pull back somewhat in recognition of the visitor’s growing threat, although they remained dangerous on the counter-attack; Parra again testing Carini shortly after Aguiar’s effort.<\/p>\n
Rodriguez remained the best player on the pitch, and it was his deflected effort which led to the corner that provided Independiente’s second. A half cleared kick went straight to the feet of Cristian Pellarano, and the midfielder struck perfectly to beat Carini and end the game as a contest with 15 minutes left on the clock.<\/p>\n
The icing on the cake for the ‘Rojo’ came with five minutes left on the clock, when substitute Andres Silvera found himself on the end of another slick move and finished confidently against a Pe\u00f1arol side now in complete disarray. The win puts the ‘Rojo’ top of Group 8 on goal difference ahead of compatriots Godoy Cruz, with a tough trip to Liga de Quito on the horizon in a week’s time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
