{"id":281188,"date":"2011-02-24T18:34:51","date_gmt":"2011-02-24T18:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/02\/24\/toxic-water-threatens-sa-city\/"},"modified":"2011-02-24T18:34:51","modified_gmt":"2011-02-24T18:34:51","slug":"toxic-water-threatens-sa-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/02\/24\/toxic-water-threatens-sa-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Toxic water &#8216;threatens SA city&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"61.2351421189\">\n        \t\t  <span><br \/>\n    <span>24 February 2011<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Last updated at <\/span><span>13:34 ET<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rapidly rising acidic water in the abandoned gold mines under Johannesburg in South Africa could leak out early next year, the water ministry warns.<\/p>\n<p>Its report recommends building pumps and monitoring stations immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The toxic liquid has been building up in mine shafts which were dug more than a century ago and stretch for many kilometres under the city. <\/p>\n<p>Trevor Manuel, a minister in the president&#8217;s office, reassured residents that there was no cause for panic.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC&#8217;s Milton Nkosi in Johannesburg says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dwaf.gov.za\/Documents\/ACIDReport.pdf\">the report<\/a>, compiled by a group of experts in December, was published by the Department of Water Affairs on its website on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The panel of experts warn that if the water is allowed to continue to rise, it will start decanting in low-lying areas in the vicinity of the former mine at Gold Reef City, popular with tourists.<\/p>\n<p>The report states that water with high levels of pH, the measure that indicates the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, will affect property and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>It recommends that acid mine drainage intervention be made in the western, central and eastern basins as a matter of urgency.<\/p>\n<p>The basins referred to are areas of interconnected mining tunnels underlying Johannesburg and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n<p>The government has said it is feasible to have pump stations by March 2012. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>More here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/world-africa-12573284\" title=\"Toxic water 'threatens SA city'\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toxic water &#8216;threatens SA city&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 24 February 2011 Last updated at 13:34 ET Rapidly rising acidic water in the abandoned gold mines under Johannesburg in South Africa could leak out early next year, the water ministry warns. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-281188","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
