Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Manchester United will make the Champions League quarter-finals following their 0-0 draw at Marseille.<\/p>\n
Ferguson admitted his side attacking inspiration – but felt the hosts had a lucky late escape.<\/p>\n
Wayne Rooney appeared to be bundled over by last man Stephane M’Bia as he chased a long through-ball towards goal in the closing stages of the goalless last-16 first leg.<\/p>\n
Ferguson told ITV1: “I think it was very lucky, the referee’s in a good position and I don’t know why he didn’t give us a free-kick and then the decision is straightforward – it’s a red card.”<\/p>\n
On his side’s performance, the Scot added: “It was disappointing, the pitch was lively but they made sure they weren’t going to lose a goal. We got in good positions but we didn’t have enough.<\/p>\n
“Nil-nil can be a dangerous scoreline if you lose a goal at home but it’s about winning the game, if we win the game we’re through. We’re confident, I think we’ll be much better.”<\/p>\n
Midfielder Michael Carrick echoed his manager’s sentiments, telling ITV1: “We’re a bit disappointed with the performance but it’s about winning at home. We’re confident we can do that but we need to play better.<\/p>\n
“Any game away in Europe is a difficult game, but we didn’t play anywhere near our best. We have an opportunity to put it right back at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n
“It wasn’t quite happening for us, our passing wasn’t great and we didn’t create many chances. We defended well, it’s just the other side – our attacking and possession has got to be better.<\/p>\n
“Our record is good at home but we have to play better.”<\/p>\n
Marseille coach Didier Deschamps was pleased with the result, and said: “For the first game it is very important you don’t concede a goal. We have done it, it was a tough game because Manchester are a big team.<\/p>\n
“We had a very good spell in the second half for 20-25 minutes but we couldn’t find a goal.<\/p>\n
“I am very happy for my players, they have done their best. It is important for the return to not concede a goal again and, if we get the opportunity, to score.<\/p>\n
“Manchester are always favourites, it’s not a bad result for us but it is a good result for Manchester.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
