DETERMINED to check outage, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is to spend about N900 million this year on the installation of solar energy to power all the nine sites of the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria (TRACON).<\/p>\n
In addition, the sites are to be complemented with Automatic Voltage Regulators to stabilise the system and ensure seamless electricity supply and air navigation.<\/p>\n
Last week, NAMA\u2019s Managing Director, Alhaji Ibrahim Auyo, had stated that one of the major challenges facing the agency was that of electricity to power its equipment, especially the TRACON, stressing that solar energy was being contemplated as an alternative source. <\/p>\n
Already, the agency has embarked on the renovation of control towers in 13 airports across the country with the installation of new state-of-the-art consoles, which are being fitted with VHF radios for air traffic control.<\/p>\n
The renovation, which will cost N1.3 billion, is to be carried out in Akure, Yola, Maiduguri, Sokoto, Kaduna, Benin, Ilorin, Ibadan, Minna, Enugu, Calabar, Owerri and Jos airports.<\/p>\n
Spokesman of the agency, Mr. Supo Atobatele, confirmed the development, adding that the agency would not relent in ensuring constant improvement in the provision of quality and efficient air navigation to airlines.<\/p>\n
He said last year, NAMA installed Conventional Very High Omni-Directional Radio Range (CVOR)\/Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) in Enugu and Instrument Landing System (ILS) and DME in Katsina.<\/p>\n
On en-route stations, he said VOR\/DME was installed at Kishi in Oyo State and in Gboko, Benue State.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n
