THE UPPER West Regional capital of Wa is not in good health and the reason is not far-fetched. A festering chieftaincy problem in the municipality is being aggravated by politics.<\/p>\n
Politics is responsible for the inability of the traditional authorities to resolve their differences over who should be the Wa Na, the remote cause of the challenge besetting the Walas.<\/p>\n
The military deployment in the town is the result of the machinations of politicians with power at their disposal.<\/p>\n
The political misdeeds of these persons is raising the temperature of an otherwise peaceful town with no known record of breaches of the public order law and spilling of blood.<\/p>\n
We are aware of an injunction slapped over the annual Dumba festival in the traditional area pending the determination of a court case on the imbroglio, yet a section of the chieftaincy divide credible information has it is disregarding the order with impunity.<\/p>\n
This is the root cause of the unnecessary and avoidable security challenge that has enveloped the municipality. If indeed political hands are responsible for the ongoing protection being rendered to a section of the chieftaincy divide in a manner which would enable the injunction-suspended activity to be celebrated by them, and we have no reason to doubt it, we deem it a bad statement on the state of rule of law in the country.<\/p>\n
It does appear that politicians have not learnt from their mistakes as they continue to mess themselves up through bad governance and breaches of the law as being unfolded in Wa.<\/p>\n
Bawku witnessed a near-similar situation but for the prevalence of wisdom on the part of the aggrieved section of the population.<\/p>\n
Breaching a court order simply because a particular grouping belongs to the party in power should not be a factor for turning the law upside down. For how long can we have the intimidating presence of the military and police in the municipality all in the name of flexing muscles or to show where power lies?<\/p>\n
We have stated it time without number that the involvement of government in chieftaincy disputes and even starting them is replete with security challenges which are difficult to contain when they break out.<\/p>\n
It would serve the nation\u2019s interest if the Wa issue is not allowed to escalate into the likes of the Dagbon troubles in future.<\/p>\n
The way things are going with indigenes from the traditional area holding powerful positions in the present government attempting to prove their authority, we must be adding another item on the full-plate of security woes.<\/p>\n
The financial implications of managing these security challenges are too gargantuan to be ignored more so when the financial situation of the country is dire. Withdrawing funds from the state kitty to manage self-inflicted security challenges laced in politics is not only unacceptable but outright foolish.<\/p>\n
This show of power at the expense of the rule of law cannot be indefinite. It would one day slip into the night when a new set of Ghanaians take over the throttles of governance. The world and all its contents are ephemeral.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
