LIBYAN leader Muammar Gaddafi personally ordered the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie in 1988, a former Libyan justice minister claims.

“I have evidence that Ghadafi ordered the Lockerbie [attack],” Mustapha Abdeljalil said in an interview with Swedish newspaper Expressen, after he defected from Ghadafi’s crumbling regime.

Abdeljalil also said Ghadafi pushed hard for the return of convicted bomber Abdel Baset al Megrahi, who was imprisoned in Scotland and whose release on compassionate grounds in 2009 provoked outrage from the US.

“To hide [his involvement], he [Ghadafi] did everything in his power to get Megrahi back from Scotland,” the minister was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

A total of 270 people, mostly Americans, died when the flight blew up over the Scottish town on Dec. 21, 1988. The explosion killed 259 people on board the Boeing 747, with a further 11 people killed on the ground as debris fell to earth.

Abdeljalil quit his post in protest against the violent crackdown of the uprising against Ghadafi’s rule which has left hundreds dead.

Expressen said it would publish further extracts from their interview Thursday.
