If you want to gauge public opinion of a contestant during a season of the X Factor, all you have to do is jump on Facebook or Twitter.<\/p>\n

Fans of the show are always quick to jump on social networking sites to air their admiration or displeasure as they watch the ITV show.<\/p>\n

And now the two parties are said to be joining forces, with executives at both companies in talks to enable viewers to vote for contestants on both the UK and US series via Facebook.<\/p>\n

Will you be my Facebook friend? Simon Cowell and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg are said to be joining forces <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While viewers currently call a hotline or text their votes, a new voting application could be in place in time for the launch of the US version of the show.<\/p>\n

The new voting application would be a paid-for service, according to the Sun.\n<\/p>\n

‘In
\nthe UK, you will buy Facebook credit like you can now for games on the
\nwebsite, and use that to vote. Phone voting would still be available
\ntoo,’ a source told the paper.<\/p>\n

‘In America, you don’t pay to
\nvote because of broadcasting laws. So viewers will vote through an app,
\nor in the way you ‘like’ a celebrity’s page now. It’s a huge,
\ngame-changing move.’<\/p>\n

Last year’s winner Matt Cardle received 15 millions
\nvotes through phone votes, while Facebook has over 500 million active
\nusers, with over 23 million in the UK alone last year.<\/p>\n

X Factor bosses have clearly been paying attention to the overlap between the two two mediums.<\/p>\n

On Twitter, ‘Hate Cher’ became the fourth most tweeted phrase in the UK when the 17-year-old teen beat out Mary Byrne in early December.<\/p>\n
