Sokoto \u2013 Former President Olusegun Obasanjo\u00a0 has stressed the need for Nigerians to be united in spite of\u00a0 their cultural , religious and ethnic differences.<\/p>\n

Obasanjo at the flag off of\u00a0 the second term re-election bid of the Sokoto Governor Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko,\u00a0 said the nation\u00a0 must manage its diversity well.<\/p>\n

The former president\u00a0 urged Nigerians to elect\u00a0 a leader who\u00a0 would be able to provide stability and visionary\u00a0 leadership.<\/p>\n

`We should not vote on the basis of\u00a0 religion or sectionalism but on the basis of the present need of the country,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Obasanjo\u00a0 expressed delight\u00a0 that\u00a0 the country\u00a0 had continued to remain united , adding: \u201cI thank God that we still have a country we can call Nigeria undiminished .\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

He stressed the\u00a0 need to improve security\u00a0 while\u00a0 tackling unemployment , poverty and poor infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The former president\u00a0 also commended\u00a0 Wamakko for transforming the state in the last four years.<\/p>\n

\u201c I have never seen a crowd like this in my life. Sokoto is a historic city in Nigeria with a special place among all the cities in Nigeria, \u201d\u00a0 he said.<\/p>\n

He called on the people of the state to give their mandate to Wamakko again in the forthcoming polls, assuring them\u00a0 that he would not fail.<\/p>\n

Also speaking at the rally, Transport Minister Yusuf Suleiman urged the people to vote for Wamakko to ensure continuity.<\/p>\n

`PDP has come to stay in Sokoto and we will continue to do all that we can to promote the growth of our state,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

He also called on party supporters to guard their votes and shun all forms of\u00a0 violence.<\/p>\n

Suleiman said\u00a0 the state government had taken steps to provide a level-playing field for candidates.<\/p>\n

He called for political tolerance and understanding to sustain the peace in the state. (NAN)<\/p>\n
