The Philadelphia Union announced that they have signed Guatemalan forward Carlos “El Pescadito” Ruiz.<\/p>\n
Ruiz, 31, returns to the MLS after a two-year stint in Greece with SuperLiga club Aris FC. He returns for a 7th MLS season, the first of which, 2002, he was voted Most Valuable Player after scoring 24 goals for the Los Angeles Galaxy. Ruiz led the Galaxy to the MLS Cup victory that season, an honor which he shared with reunited teammate, Union captain, Danny Califf.<\/p>\n
Since leaving MLS in 2009, Ruiz has continued to be an offensive threat, scoring 20 goals in 66 appearances with Paraguayan First Division club Olimpia Asunci\u00f3n FC (ten goals in 18 appearances), Mexican First Division club Puebla FC (nine goals in 33 appearances), and Super League Greece club Aris FC (one goal in 15 appearances).<\/p>\n
Recently, the striker notched three goals in UEFA Europa League competition against FK Austria Wien (2) and Norwegian side Rosenborg BK (1).<\/p>\n
In six MLS seasons with L.A., Dallas, and Toronto, Ruiz played a total of 155 matches, 137 as a starter, logging 12,349 minutes and registering 82 goals and 17 assists. Ruiz holds the record for most goals in MLS postseason history with 16. The 31-year-old is the 10th-highest all-time scorer in MLS history, and third among active players behind Jeff Cunningham and Landon Donovan.<\/p>\n
This is an important signing for the a young Philadelphia Union squad. Ruiz adds depth and talent to an already intimidating front line that includes Danny Mwanga and Sebastian Le Toux.<\/p>\n
The biggest question mark with Ruiz is how he will mesh with the Union. Ruiz was notorious for his lazy and unmotivated play in Toronto, antics that caused his removal from the club. Coming to a city like Philadelphia, Ruiz will need to be at his best everyday or prepare for a long season of boos and heckling from the Sons of Ben.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
