NEW YORK: US President Barack Obama has called Lara Logan, the CBS chief foreign correspondent, who was sexually assaulted and beaten by a mob during her coverage of jubilation that ensued after President Hosni Mubarak’s step-down.<\/p>\n
“The president called her late this morning” and expressed concern for her condition, a family friend told ‘The New York Post’.<\/p>\n
The White House has asked Egypt to bring the perpetrators to justice.<\/p>\n
“We believe that those responsible for these acts – and obviously there was other violence – need to be held accountable,” Jay Carney, White House spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
In a short news release on Tuesday, CBS said that the channel’s team was surrounded by a mob of more than 200 people whipped into frenzy, in the midst of the celebration.<\/p>\n
“In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers,” CBS said.<\/p>\n
Logan, 39, then reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the US on the first flight the next morning.<\/p>\n
Yesterday ,more details emerged. Logan was sexually assaulted by thugs yelling, “Jew! Jew!”, a source told The Post. And the day before, Logan had told Esquire.com that Egyptian soldiers were hassling her and her crew had accused them of “being Israeli spies.”<\/p>\n
Logan, however, is not Jewish. Logan and CBS reportedly did not report the crime to Egyptian authorities nor did they check into a hotel in the country because they did not trust local security.<\/p>\n
More than 140 journalists were attacked, detained and suffered some form of injury, according to the New York based Committee to Protect Journalists.<\/p>\n
