Fragrance<\/figcaption><\/figure>
\nFragrance is a young Nigerian singer who relocated to Lagos from Warri in anticipation of fame and fortune in exchange for her musical talents. Her experience so far has not matched her expectations as she still lives off her siblings back in Warri.
\nFour years and counting, the fair skinned beauty has risen past a disappointing recording contract and is fast learning the ropes of independent survival in the rough music terrain. In this chat with Lolade SOWOOLU, she shares some of her challenges as a female artiste and talks about her coming sophomore scheduled for a first quarter release.
\nIs Fragrance your real name ?
\nNo it\u2019s a stage name. My real name is Bridget Oritsematosan Kayoh. I\u2019m an Itsekiri from Delta state.
\nWhen did you realise you could sing?
\nI\u2019ve been singing since I was ten years old in churches back in Warri. I joined the adult choir when I was ten. Professionally, I started in 2006 when I relocated from Warri to Lagos .
\nSo how did you join the adult choir at ten?
\nThe church I attended then had a programme and I rendered a special number. From there the pastor called me up, prayed for me and asked me to join the adult choir. I started taking solos and that was how I was discovered.
\nI used to be signed to a record label but I left because they did not fulfill their promises. While on the label I released an album that wasn\u2019t well promoted but I\u2019ve left all that behind now. I\u2019m moving on
\nWhen was the album released ?
\nIn 2007. It was titled \u2018So lovely\u2019. I released two videos too \u2013 Lover and Friend and Shake Shake.
\nHow do you describe your kind of music?
\nI call it R N B. But in my sophomore, there\u2019s a lot of \u2018 Feel good \u2018music because I discovered I could do a lot more of them. I tried a little Rap, Ragga and Fuji too.
\nHow many track does it have in all and are there any collaborations?
\nThere are seventeen tracks in all. I featured a number of artistes including 2face, Rymzo, LKT and Adol . I also worked with a bunch of producers \u2013 Puffy T, Rymzo, BJ and a lot more, just so I can get different feels in the album.
\nWhat\u2019s the album titled?
\nNow and forever.
\nWhy \u2018Now and Forever\u2019?
\nI have a track so titled in the album. And I believe the songs will last now and forever.
\nTell us a few track titles?
\nThe one featuring 2face is titled,\u2019Boy friend\u2019. There\u2019s \u2018We be one\u2019 featuring LKT. I have \u2018So in love, To ba fe jo\u2019 and a gospel song titled \u2018Don\u2019t leave\u2019
\nWhat was your former label called and how long was your agreement suppose to last ?
\nIt\u2019s called D and I. Our agreement was to last seven years, but there was a clause saying if certain things weren\u2019t done, the artiste\u2019s free to leave after two years. And that\u2019s what I did.
\nWhere did they default?
\nThey promised me things like collaboration with international artistes, a private car and apartment, trips to London and a lot I can\u2019t name now. But they didn\u2019t do any.
\nComing to Lagos, what were your expectations?
\nI just kept singing in churches. I\u2019ve always wanted to act and I was hoping I could do so along side singing here in Lagos. But my manager explained that I should concentrate on singing first and then take up acting later.
\nDid you ever try to get auditioned for a role?
\nNot yet. He (Manager Efa) said I should concentrate on the music.
\nHas moving to Lagos paid off yet?
\nI moved in in 2006 and it\u2019s yet to pay off. My siblings have been the ones supporting me. I have five sisters and three brothers. Music only pays a little of my bills.
\nWas it tough convincing them to release you to come to Lagos?
\nNot at all. My mum supported me before her death and that\u2019s why my siblings still support me .
\nDid you lose your mum before relocating?
\nNo. She died in April 2008.
\nWhere is academics in this whole story? Don\u2019t you have plans to get higher education?
\nMy preferred course of study is Theater Arts or Mass communication because I\u2019ve always wanted to be entertainment inclined. I was once offered \u2018Library Science\u2019 to study at the Delta State University, Abraka but I didn\u2019t take it up.
\nWho were your role models when growing up?
\nCeline Dion and Mariah Carey. Now, it\u2019s Beyonce. I\u2019ve always dreamt of standing on the stage of Celine Dion and meeting Mariah Carey.
\nDo you still see your self going that far with all the realities before you?
\nOf course I still do. It\u2019s a dream I believe will come to pass if God wants it. There\u2019s still a lot of time
\nAny plans of going back to school?
\nI will. But I\u2019m not thinking in that direction right now. Even if I get real busy with my music career, there\u2019s the on-line study option, so I\u2019ll still get higher education.
\nApart from the label set back, what other forms of challenge have you had to deal with on your
\nway to where you\u2019re going?
\nI don\u2019t call them challenges. I call them stepping stones. The bulk of them all has been with finances.
\nIn your little experience with professional singing, has there been a time you felt gender discriminated?
\nSure. I feel the ladies are not being given fair chances because they \u2013 investors who are mostly male, feel we\u2019ll soon be married off. And so because of that mind set most men have, it\u2019s like with everything you do as a woman, you\u2019re trying to prove a point or make a statement to the men that \u2018we are capable too\u2019.
\nSpeaking of marriage, is it in the view yet?
\nNot at all. That would come much later. There\u2019s a long time before that. I don\u2019t want any distraction.
\nSo no promises can lure you into marriage now?
\nI\u2019ve heard so many of that (promises ). I usually laugh when men come with those promises. All the same I\u2019m not God so who knows what God has in store.
\nWhat attracts you to a man for marriage?
\nThere must be love. Love is every thing to me. I must feel welcomed around him. I expect that he\u2019ll be good looking and with a large heart.
\nDo you have other interests apart from acting and singing?
\nI\u2019d like to own a beauty salon where all beauty treatments can be done for male and female
\nDo you like a big family?
\nFour kids will do. Maybe two boys and two girls. And it would be nice to settle down in Lagos or Abuja.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
