The ruling National Democratic Congress says Constitutional requirement for the president to appoint 50 percent of his Cabinet from Parliament made it difficult for the government to deliver on its campaign promise of ensuring 40 percent representation of women in government.
\nThe party has been criticized, particularly by gender activists, for failing to live up to its manifesto pledge.
\nBut NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu-Nketia told Joy News that the government has been constrained by the law.
\n\u201cIf you have less than 10 per cent of your MPs being females, then it is going to be a miracle to be able to get 40 per cent of your appointees being females,\u201d he said.
\nMr Asiedu-Nketia said, as the party opens nominations for parliamentary primaries, it will give 50 per cent rebate to female aspirants to encourage more women to contest.
\nHe believes if the party is able to put many women in Parliament, it will be in a better stead to fulfill its manifesto promise of appointing forty per cent of women into government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
