Gamal Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s first president Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has backed calls for Egypt President Hosni Mubarak to resign but insists that the reigns of Egypt should be handed over to a more youthful person and not ElBaradei.
\nSpeaking in an interview with Paul Adom Otchere on Metro TV, Tuesday, the journalist, who is also of Egyptian heritage and has been living in Egypt most of his life said he respected Mr ElBaradei as a person but does not believe he is the right candidate to replace Mubarak.
\n\u201cHe has fought well for the country… he commands a lot of respectability as an elder but as an elder, he should understand that it\u2019s time to give power to the younger generation who deserve a better future,\u201d he surmised.
\nGamal Nrkumah, whose mother, Fathia, was Egyptian, also intimated that foreign nations had exerted their influence on Egypt for far too long and it was time they respect the decision of the Egyptian population.
\nAsked about Israel\u2019s fears that Egypt may have a hostile leadership should Mubarak exit, he said it was neither for Israel nor the West to decide the political fate of Egypt but rather, its citizens.
\n\u201cThe West should also accept that the people of North Africa and the Middle East desire more democracy and desire to elect leaders of her choice and not leaders that suit Israel or that leaders that serve Israel\u2019s interest,\u201d he said.
\nHe said Egypt had long been oppressed under Mubarak and it was time for the ordinary Egyptian to assume some form of decision power concerning affairs of the state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
