Prophet Nana Kofi Yirenkyi aka Jesus Onetouch<\/figcaption><\/figure>
\nIT WAS a pathetic scene at the Cocoa Affairs Court in Accra yesterday when the Founder and General Overseer of Jesus Blood Prophetic Ministry, Prophet Nana Kofi Yirenkyi aka Jesus Onetouch, was slapped with a 10-year jail-term in hard labour for defilement and incest.
\nOnetouch was convicted and sentenced to ten years\u2019 imprisonment on each of the two charges of defilement and incest, but the sentences are to run concurrently.
\nThe court, presided over by Mrs. Georgina Mensah-Datsa, found him guilty of having sexual intercourse with his 10-year-old biological daughter, although the Prophet, even while being escorted to jail, still maintained that he did not commit the crime, and screamed, \u201cGod should kill me if I defiled my daughter!\u201d
\nThe 47-year-old man and father of six arrived at the courtroom around 9:20, holding two Bibles and looking cheerful and full of hope. He was fully dressed in a black suit, white shirt, blue tie and white belt, with a pair of white shoes to match.
\nUpon entering the dock, he said some prayers before the judgment was read; but he looked stunned when he heard the sentence. However, he quickly got himself together and managed a smile.
\nThere was more drama after the final verdict. As he was being led away by the police, he shouted to journalists who had thronged the court that he had something to tell Ghanaians.
\nThe contingent of armed policemen would however not have any of that and asked him to keep quiet; but the prophet was also determined to have his way, shouting out to the tape recorders and cameras: \u201cGod should kill me if I defiled my daughter!\u201d
\nHis wife, Akosua Agyeiwaa Twumasi, relatives and some church members who wept uncontrollably, rushed to meet the convict, but were restrained by the police who bundled Jesus Onetouch into the waiting van which sped off immediately for him to go and begin his sentence.
\nThe victim was reported to have disclosed to an aunt that on Saturdays, Sundays and Tuesdays, when she did not go to school, her father had sexual intercourse with her in a corner of the bedroom.
\nShe gave a vivid description of the act between her and the father, saying whenever he wanted to have sex with her, he would order her to lie on the floor, lie on top of her and put his sexual organ into hers.
\nShe went on to state that he ejaculated on the floor and wiped the liquid with a white handkerchief. The child said she always felt pain anytime the father did that to her but when she cried, he begged her to stop.
\nHe also warned her not to tell anybody or else he would beat her with a belt.
\nThe victim, by this description at that tender age, was able to convince the Circuit Court that her father had indeed sexually molested her.
\nMrs. Mensah-Datsa in her judgment, which lasted about 25 minutes, indicated that the victim was truthful, as her evidence was corroborated by prosecution witnesses and medical reports.
\nThe two reports from doctors who examined the victim, according to the judge, said the hymen was not intact and that corroborated the victim\u2019s story.
\nThe prosecution, led by State Attorney Helene Kwawukume, the judge noted, was able to establish all the necessary ingredients in the case such as the victim being a minor, a daughter of Onetouch and that she was indeed defiled by her father.
\nThe judge, giving reasons for her decision, said there was enough evidence to support the claim of the victim that her father normally slept with her on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sunday, as the school register had confirmed that the victim was on several occasions absent from school.
\nThe judge said from the evidence of the investigator, Onetouch had wanted to settle the case out of court, but the victim\u2019s mother refused to accept such compensation.
\nThe assertion by Onetouch that it was Efo, his houseboy, who used to insert his finger in the victim\u2019s vagina and that he (Onetouch) had even reported the matter to the SCC police station long before the instant case, according to the judge, was a hoax, as there was no evidence to prove that.
\nThe judge also said it was not true that the victim\u2019s mother confessed before the Commander of Akropong police station that her daughter mentioned Efo as the culprit, since the station diary never recorded such information.
\nThe judge dismissed claims by the defence, led by Kwabena Adomako Acheampong, that the victim\u2019s mother was bitter and therefore had coached the child to destroy her father\u2019s image because Onetouch threatened not to care of the child after the mother had refused to allow him to bring the girl back to Accra from their hometown Dawu, in the Eastern Region.
\nAccording to the judge, the doubt created was insufficient to acquit Jesus Onetouch.
\nShe held the view that it would be difficult for the mother who was in a cordial relationship with both the convict and his wife, to frame him up, knowing very well the societal stigmatization that both father and child would suffer.
\nHowever, the judge told him it was not the end of the road and that he could appeal even to the Supreme Court if he was dissatisfied with the judgment.
\nThe victim, according to the prosecution, was born out of wedlock, and lived with her mother at Dawu in Akuapem until 2005 when she relocated to Accra to live with her father at McCarthy Hill where she attended school.
\nThe prosecution said in the latter part of 2007, the convict began having sex with the victim, each time before he organised a church service, so as to lure more members to his church.
\nNana Kofi Yirenkyi aka Onetouch had been on remand since the case started last year March and had claimed he was innocent on several occasions, even insisting for an inspection of his penis which he claimed was too big to have fitted into his little daughter\u2019s vagina.
\nPastor Frank Adu Boahen, Resident Pastor of Jesus Blood Prophetic Ministry, expressed sorrow at the turn of event, saying that it was the verdict of men and not of God.
\n\u201cGod is the final judge. He will intervene,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cSomeone is responsible for the way the verdict has gone.\u201d
\nPastor Nobleman Appiah, Assistant Resident Pastor, urged church members to continue to support the convict through prayers, adding that perhaps, there was a purpose for which he was being imprisoned.
\n\u201cThe inmates at the prison also need salvation,\u201d he added.
\nK.N. Adomako Acheampong, Defence Counsel, said the judgment was a very bad one.
\n\u201cToday is a sad day for the rule of law. Right from the start, the intention of everyone was to have him jailed,\u201d he said.
\nHe indicated that he will appeal against the ruling.
