The \u201c<strong>Ahokyere<\/strong>\u201d demo prearranged by political pressure group, the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) and its allies&#8230;<br \/>\n&#8230;, Generational Youth Movement (GYM), Progressive Nationalist Forum (PNF) together with other union groups, truly lived up to its media hype and billing.<br \/>\nClad in red t-shirts and red bands, the AFAG demonstrators began their protest march against harsh economic conditions at Kwame Nkrumah Circle through Farisco, the Ministries and other principal streets of Accra and finally ended at the Independence Square.<br \/>\nSave for one innocuous incident which occurred at the precincts of the Ministry of Works and Housing in Accra where an unidentified man splashed water on the protesters and hurriedly took to his heels, the largely peaceful march would have been uneventful.<br \/>\nBut the police detachment came in handy to forestall what would have been an unfortunate incident.<br \/>\nBearing placards some of which had the inscriptions \u201c<strong>Azaar Fuel Prices<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>Eei, Ghana Nie!<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>Promise and Fail Gov\u2019t<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>Mills Is Panyin And Gbagbo Is Kakra<\/strong>\u201d, the pressure group called on the government to take steps to ameliorate the suffering of the masses and immediately reduce fuel prices.<br \/>\nIn an interview with\u00a0<strong>PeaceFm<\/strong>&#8216;s Yaw Obeng Manu, who covered the demonstration, various speakers impressed on the Mills&#8217;-led administration the need to fulfill his electoral promises and to also do away with the taxes on petroleum products.<br \/>\nRelatedly, in the Ashanti Regional town of Kumasi, a pro-government group, the Movement for Better Ghana (MBG), also hit the streets amidst calls for the setting up of a probe into the misappropriation of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) debt Recovery Levy and subsequent prosecution of any former government appointee in the erstwhile Kufuor administration who misused the fund.<br \/>\nThe protest march dubbed \u201c<strong>Anigye<\/strong>\u201d started from the Kumasi Cultural Centre and ended at the Jubilee Park.<br \/>\nSampson Nyamekye of\u00a0<strong>PeaceFM<\/strong>\u2019s sister station in Kumasi\u00a0<strong>Hello FM<\/strong> who described the counter demonstration as peaceful, reports that leaders of the group produced copious documents which they assert validates their claim that part of the TOR Debt Recovery Levy was used by the NPP to fund their communication strategies that did not directly benefit the State.<br \/>\nWielding wielded placards some of which read \u201c<strong>NPP Is Corrupt<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>We Demand Accountability<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>TOR Cash For Cocaine<\/strong>\u201d, \u201c<strong>Jail Professor Gyan Baffuor and Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei<\/strong>\u201d, the MBG said they will continue with their agitations until government responds to their petition.<br \/>\nSampson described turnout as impressive for a protest march held in the stronghold of the opposition New Patriotic Party.<br \/>\nSource: Kwadwo Asante<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It could rival other protest marches held in the country in terms of numbers and will certainly go down in Ghana\u2019s history as perhaps one of the most patronized and highly successfully organized demonstrations.
