\nOne of Nollywood\u2019s fastest rising actresses, Mercy Johnson, who many \tindustry insiders have wrongfully pigeonholed as only fit for emotional \troles, has come up to debunk the claim. The curvaceous actress, who stunned \tmultitude of movie buffs with her A-class display in
\nKill The Bride, in an interview with our correspondent, took it in good \tfate, then sounded it loud and clear that she could act whatever role that \tcomes her way, whether emotional roles, action roles, bitchy roles, name it, \tas she is not inflexible in her interpretation of roles.
\nBut those who thought she was fit only for the cry-cry baby role have \treasons to argue so. In a handful of the films she\u2019d glittered in, playing \temotional roles was more.
\nBesides, this reporter who watched her from close range on the set of a \tmovie in the making almost concluded so, too, after seeing the ease with \twhich she evoked tears the next minute the youthful director yelled action.
\n\u201cThose who thought I could only act emotional roles were mistaken. I am a \tflexible actress. I do action films; I do bitchy roles. It\u2019s not compulsory \tI do emotional roles; it is just that I carry emotional roles extremely \twell. Fine, most of my films are emotional films, but I have also done \taction films like
\nJust Before The Ordination or Orungbeja; I\u2019ve done quite a lot\u201d, she argued.
\nOn the same set, before the interview held, our correspondent overheard her \tcolleagues describe her ability to conjure tears on time as uncommon. But \tthat is not the only good thing about her acting, she also has an uncanny \tability to contort her face and change facial expressions to fit the mood of \tthe scenes as they change.
\n\u201cI did not have any formal acting training,\u201d the actress, whose maiden lead \trole was in
\nThe Maid, released in 2002, said, adding: \u201cI attribute my acting talent to \tGod, the same thing for getting the lead role in The Maid, because I was \tfreshly out of the secondary school. I suppose my skills stood out, because \twe were quite many that rehearsed for the role, but I eventually got it and, \tif you knew Nek Video boss, he wouldn\u2019t give you a role if you don\u2019t deserve \tit\u201d.
\nThe Maid might have launched her into fame, but her first movie role was in \tMoving Train in 2000.
\nMany video buffs still talk about her outing in
\nKill The Bride for as varied reasons as the colour of people\u2019s lips. But \tmore people we\u2019ve come in contact with just can\u2019t stop discussing her \tkissing binge in the movie.
\nAnd so, we asked whether she felt any sensation creep through her spine as \tshe locked lips with the opposite sex.
\n\u201cI didn\u2019t feel anything. It was quite difficult for me though, but on second \thand it is my career; I believe if you want to grow you must go the extra \tmile, that is the way I see it.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s wrong to kiss that much people in one movie but we are not talking of \treality here; it is make-believe and that\u2019s why it is a movie. For people to \tunderstand your pain and see what you went through, it is better you do \tthings the way it should be done,\u201d insisted the Okene, Kogi State-born \tMercy.
\nThe actress, who was born in Satellite Town, Lagos, told us she would do the \tlip-locking scenes over and over again if the script requires it.
\n\u201cI\u2019ll do it over and again. I don\u2019t have to charge more than my normal fees \tbecause I have to kiss in a movie,\u201d the forth child in a family of seven \tsaid.
\nThe 100 level undergraduate of the English Department of Lagos State \tUniversity (LASU), described as a homely person, told us her favourite \tpastime is playing Monopoly with her ex-Naval officer father, giving the \timpression of one whose family means the world to her. Little wonder she \tsaid: \u201cThe most important man in my life is my father\u201d, revealing that her \teldest sister, Rella, is her favourite of all her six siblings.
\n\u201cI\u2019m from a family of seven \u2013 four girls and three boys. The girls came \tfirst and I am the last girl. My brothers are so \u2018sweet\u2019, just like my \tsisters; the three boys are Emmanuel, Samson and Solomon. My favourite \tsister is Rella \u2013 she\u2019s my mother, my sister and everything. She is so \tbecause that\u2019s the role she has been playing in our lives for a long time,\u201d \tthe dark-skinned beauty enthused.
\nMercy in Last Kiss
\nEfforts to make her talk about her mother met a stone wall, just as she wouldn\u2019t divulge anything about her boyfriend other than that the chap is not jealous that she is so attached to Mr Johnson, her dad.
\nThough born in Lagos, Mercy told us she left Lagos to join her father in Calabar, which was why she started her primary education in far away Cross River State at the Nigerian Navy Primary School, Ikot Ansa.
\nShe could, however, not complete her primary school there because her father was transferred back to Lagos, where she lated continued at the Nigerian Navy Primary School, Sattelite Town.
\nSoon after, off she went again to Rivers State for her secondary school at the Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Port Harcourt.
