Lanre Balogun<\/figcaption><\/figure>
\nMany \t\t\t\t\t\t\tpeople will never believe that Lanre Balogun has \t\t\t\t\t\t\ttrod the thespian lane for the past 25 years. From \t\t\t\t\t\t\this days at the University of Ibadan playhouse to \t\t\t\t\t\t\tnow, he wields some power in the movie industry \t\t\t\t\t\t\thaving\u00a0 featured in several movies. Lanre, who fell \t\t\t\t\t\t\tout with his intellectually minded family for towing \t \t\t\t\t\t\tthe line of theatre even after studying Mathematics \t\t\t\t\t\t\tand Statistics at the Yaba College of Technology, \t\t\t\t\t\t\tLagos tells the story of how it all started and the \t\t\t\t\t\t\tlevel he found himself in the year 2005, almost \t\t\t\t\t\t\ttwenty five years after. This is an undiluted story \t\t\t\t\t\t\tnever told before to any one so enjoy it.
\nOver 25 years of acting <\/strong>
\nI have spent over 25 years as a practitioner and \t\t\t\t\t\t\tit is not a child\u2019s play. I started as a thespian \t\t\t\t\t\t\tartiste. I was a stage actor. I started in Ibadan, \t\t\t\t\t\t\tduring the good old days of University of Ibadan \t\t\t\t\t\t\tplay group.
\nI moved on to Koko Close with NTA Ibadan and \t\t\t\t\t\t\tseveral other productions before we all migrated to \t\t\t\t\t\t\tLagos. I am talking about very early 80s. At that \t\t\t\t\t\t\ttime, what was done was celluloid by the few like \t\t\t\t\t\t\tHubert Ogunde, Ade Love etc, that is\u00a0 proper film \t\t\t \t\t\t\tmaking in the true sense of the word. What was very \t\t\t\t\t\t\tpopular was the proper stage productions and boy, we \t\t\t\t\t\t\treally were busy. We were either at the Museum \t\t\t\t\t\t\tkitchen, PEC Repertory Theatre and with Chuck Mike. \t\t\t\t\t\t\tI tell you I was one of the first artistes with \t\t\t\t\t\t\tChuck Mike when we were together for the Collective \t\t\t\t\t\t\t Artistes. I was one of the few privileged artistes \t\t\t\t\t\t\tto start Festival of Black Drama (FESBAD). We had \t\t\t\t\t\t\tDede Mabiaku then as an actor, Richard Mofe Damijo, \t\t\t\t\t\t\tIrhia Enakhimio, Sola Omoba, Vivian Anamaba, Kese \t\t\t\t\t\t\tJabari. The play we did then, won an award. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\tplay, Ceremonies of Dark Old Man was written by Leon \t\t\t\t\t\t\t Elders 3 and directed by Segun Ojewuyi. Our director \t\t\t\t\t\t\tSegun had to travel abroad. I hear he is now a \t\t\t\t\t\t\tprofessor in an American University.
\nBackground <\/strong>
\nWhat I am doing now is more like a genetic thing. \t\t\t\t\t\t\tOutside of the fact that I went to school, I still \t\t\t\t\t\t\tdo what I like to do. Funny enough, I didn\u2019t go to \t\t\t\t\t\t\tUniversity of Ibadan like most people think. I went \t\t\t\t\t\t\tto Yaba College of Technology and studied \t\t\t\t\t\t\t mathematics and statistics. Do you believe me? That \t\t\t\t\t\t\tis why I keep telling you that acting is in me. I \t\t\t\t\t\t\thave been a science student through and through.\u00a0 I \t\t\t\t\t\t\tcome from\u00a0 a home of literary giants. My dad is the \t\t\t\t\t\t\tauthor of a school certificate book used in 1972 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t(Tobias and The Angel). His name is S.I. Balogun. He \t\t \t\t\t\t\twas the Principal of Kings College Lagos. He just \t\t\t\t\t\t\tleft Kings College about four or five years ago and \t\t\t\t\t\t\thad also pioneered several Federal Government \t\t\t\t\t\t\tColleges in Nigeria. My mother is also a scientist.
\nMy grandfather was a renowned teacher as well in \t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe 1800s in Oyo and other places. With that kind of \t\t\t\t\t\t\tbackground, you can\u2019t but be the best in anything \t\t\t\t\t\t\tyou elect to do. I just wanted to prove a point to \t\t\t\t\t\t\tmy father that was why I went into sciences. When I \t\t\t\t\t\t\tcompleted, I now moved over to cinematography \t\t\t\t\t\t\t proper. There was a school in Nigeria, then, Oliver \t\t\t\t\t\t\tGrant Film Institute affiliated to the New York \t\t\t\t\t\t\tInstitute of Technology in Ibadan. It was there I \t\t\t\t\t\t\tdid my proper training.\u00a0 I did cinematography and \t\t\t\t\t\t\tfilm making. The school was very close to the Ibadan \t\t\t\t\t\t\tPolytechnic so the HOD of the school took care of \t\t\t\t\t \t\tour department. I was very privileged to be taught \t\t\t\t\t\t\tby John Fashanu\u2019s father. We called him lawyer \t\t\t\t\t\t\tFashanu and he tauight me industrial relations as \t\t\t\t\t\t\twell.
\nHe also taught me law in the school. Dr. Kunle \t\t\t\t\t\t\tEmdin was my HOD then. He also happened to be a \t\t\t\t\t\t\tproduct of the New York Institute of Technology.
\nChallenge <\/strong>
\nI still recall the challenge of Ceremonies of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\tdark old man. It was a great show which I did in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t1989. You could imagine how we created Harlem here \t\t\t\t\t\t\tin Lagos in FESBAD. When we finished\u00a0 rehearsing, we \t\t\t\t\t\t\twere supposed to show at PEC Repertory Theatre owned \t\t\t\t\t\t\tby J.P. Clarke. Richard had a problem with J.P. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t Clarke and ten minutes to the show, it was \t\t\t\t\t\t\tcancelled. We were there to redirect people to the \t\t\t\t\t\t\tMuseum kitchen. Richard was playing my father in the \t\t\t\t\t\t\tplay. He has always had the big bulky frame even \t\t\t\t\t\t\tthough I was older than he was.
\nI was very frail and skinny those days. Dede \t\t\t\t\t\t\tMabiaku played my senior brother. I played Bobby \t\t\t\t\t\t\tParker. What made my role so challenging was that I \t\t\t\t\t\t\tdidn\u2019t have to speak so much. It was movements, \t\t\t\t\t\t\tgesticulations and different body expressions. But I \t\t\t\t\t\t\twas the pitch in the story. And it was a round \t\t\t\t\t\t\ttheatre thing. We now used the car park of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\tMuseum kitchen as the stage. That was when I \t\t\t\t\t\t\trespected Duro Oni as a lighting expert. As you \t\t\t\t\t\t\tknow, everything happened at the barber\u2019s shop. We \t\t\t\t\t \t\thad a barber\u2019s throne and everything revolved around \t\t\t\t\t\t\tit, we got a fifteen minutes standing ovation from \t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe American community in Nigeria.
\nThey had never done it in any show in Nigeria \t\t\t\t\t\t\tbefore. We spent\u00a0 three\u00a0 months rehearsing. We \t\t\t\t\t\t\tneeded to get it very right as we were performing \t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor an audience that was predomeintly American so we \t\t\t\t\t\t\tneeded to sound distinct and clear as American.
\nDifference in style <\/strong>
\nYou see I don\u2019t belong to the group of those who \t\t\t\t\t\t\tcock and shoot, those\u00a0 who rehearse as the shooting \t\t\t\t\t\t\tis going on as the case may be. But I don\u2019t feel \t\t\t\t\t\t\tworried at all. If you keep lying for long, one day \t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe truth will catch up with you.
\nThe truth is already catching up with them. When \t\t\t\t\t\t\tyou produce trash, who will buy them? You keep \t\t\t\t\t\t\ttelling us of one witch in the village or one mama. \t\t\t\t\t\t\tYou keep telling us tale by moonlight. Nigerians \t\t\t\t\t\t\thave all passed that level. We are more than \t\t\t\t\t\t\t exposed. Every day we see new movies on multichoice, \t\t\t\t\t\t\tDSTV and what have you. You can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t cook up trash \t\t\t\t\t\t\tand serve us all to eat. Never.
\nCoping<\/strong>
\nWell, I have been coping because I do other \t\t\t\t\t\t\tthings, I am not a man that is just dependent on \t\t\t\t\t\t\tacting. I consult on media matter. I can\u2019t imagine \t\t\t\t\t\t\tmyself sitting in one statistics office checking the \t\t\t\t\t\t\tnumber of people that took inoculation in one month. \t\t\t\t\t\t \tIt\u2019s not my idea at all, I need freedom. But you see \t\t\t\t\t\t\tno knowledge is wasted.
\nHostages <\/strong>
\nIt was my first movie in the true sense of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\tword. Hostage by Tade Ogidan I have been a friend of \t\t\t\t\t\t\tTade\u2019s for over twenty two years. From the NTA days \t\t\t\t\t\t\tat Ibadan. We all moved to Lagos enmasse. I met my \t\t\t\t\t\t\tfirst producer after that movement, Deinde Gilberts. \t\t\t\t\t\t\tHe was into Youths Scene. I presented programmes \t\t\t\t \t\t\tthen. Auntie Julie Coker was my executive director. \t\t\t\t\t\t\tOre Ajakaiye was my producer. Then I made my \t\t\t\t\t\t\tincursion into acting. We had done several solid \t\t\t\t\t\t\tplays of the week on NTA. We did Abiku, a \t\t\t\t\t\t\tpresentation for NIFETEP, Nigeria festival of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t television production in 1986. Abiku was popular and \t\t\t\t\t\t\twon the best award of that year. We did the Fallen \t\t\t\t\t\t\tAngel and a few others. If we put those production \t\t\t\t\t\t\tinto tapes as film, it would\u00a0 be\u00a0 mega buster. But \t\t\t\t\t\t\tit\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s okay, nothing spoil.
\nFilm industry<\/strong>
\nEverything had started well. There were some \t\t\t\t\t\t\tserious minded people who had the pedigree and the \t\t\t\t\t\t\texposure. I mean people like Tunde Kelani, Amaka \t\t\t\t\t\t\tIgwe, Lola Fani Kayode.\u00a0 But you see, until those \t\t\t\t\t\t \twho stumbled into the issues came into it, things \t\t\t\t\t\t\thave never been the same. Mogbo, moya (I heard and I \t\t\t\t\t\t\tcame). They were called for supper and they took \t\t\t\t\t\t\tover the entire dish. I always tell them that this \t\t\t\t\t\t\tbusiness is not for the half baked. It is not what \t\t\t\t\t\t\tyou can haphazardly put together. They will find \t\t\t\t\t \t\ttheir place when you place side by side the very \t\t\t\t\t\t\tclassy production.
\nMarketers are clannish <\/strong>
\nWhat I meant is not far fetched. You don\u2019t\u00a0 need \t\t\t\t\t\t\tan astrologer. Neither do you need a soothsayer to \t\t\t\t\t\t\ttell you that the movie marketers in Nigeria are \t\t\t\t\t\t\tindeed truely clannish. Look at most of the films \t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey produce these days. The so called English films \t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey produce these days usually have from the lead \t\t\t\t\t\t\tactor to the extras, the crew members are Igbo.
\nYou begin to wonder if these are the only people \t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat constitute Nigeria. Outside of this country, \t\t\t\t\t\t\tpeople look at Nigeria as predominantly Igbo people. \t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe character and culture they portray is \t\t\t\t\t\t\tpredominantly Igbo. When you also look at the kind \t \t\t\t\t\t\tof production that are put together, you see the non \t\t\t\t\t\t\t inclusion of the tested, trained professional from \t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe other tribes who should be there and are totally \t\t\t\t\t\t\tsidelined. They are idling away, then you go for \t\t\t\t\t\t\tpeople who are unqualified and can\u2019t even give you \t\t\t\t\t\t\twhat you want professionally. May be because he is \t\t\t\t\t\t\tnot an Igbo brother. He is not Nnamdi, Okechukwu or \t\t\t\t \t\t\tEze. These are some of the reasons why I say they \t\t\t\t\t\t\tare clannish.
\nSomebody will say they are not the only ones who \t\t\t\t\t\t\tmake film. I agree. They are not the only ones that \t\t\t\t\t\t\tmake films. Where the Yoruba differ is that if a \t\t\t\t\t\t\tYoruba man feels you can deliver, he calls you up no \t\t\t\t\t\t\tmatter what. Some people who cannot speak more of \t\t\t \t\t\t\tYoruba are tutored to be part of the productions. I \t\t\t\t\t\t\tam sure you must have seen \t\t\t\t\t\t\t Clem Ohameze<\/a> or \t\t\t\t\t\t\t Liz Benson<\/a>, etc. They can\u2019t speak Yoruba but \t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey are tutored even though their Yoruba is not \t\t\t\t\t\t\tperfect. I feel that Yorubas are more liberal my \t\t\t\t\t\t\tbrother. What I want to tell the Igbo who are in \t\t\t \t\t\t\tmovies is to be more liberal and create a level \t\t\t\t\t\t\tplaying field.
\nMemorable <\/strong>
\nI recollect how I was able to save very important \t\t\t\t\t\t\tproduction. It was the show of Rasheed Gbadamosi, \t\t\t\t\t\t\tthen secretary for ANA \u2013 Association of Nigeria \t\t\t\t\t\t\tAuthors. I did the prose on Okigbo, it was the \t\t\t\t\t\t\tGreener Grass. Veterans were on board. We had Lola \t\t\t\t \t\t\tFani Kayode as an actress. She was paired with Sam \t\t\t\t\t\t\tLoco, Teni Aofiyebi, Rowland Henshaw professionals \t\t\t\t\t\t\tin their own right. We were many. Then somebody was \t\t\t\t\t\t\tnot ready so I was called in to do that. I remember \t\t\t\t\t\t\tI really gave it to them.
\nHard man <\/strong>
\nThey look at my face and say I am hard. I\u00a0 am \t\t\t\t\t\t\thard when I need to be . In Hostages I was mean and \t\t\t\t\t\t\trude. In Contractors by Raph Nwadike, I was rude and \t\t\t\t\t\t\tmean. But I have also played soft roles. I have \t\t\t\t\t\t\tplayed pastors severally. In Vindicated, I was \t\t\t\t\t\t\t Pastor and played along side Onyeka Onwenu. I see \t\t\t\t\t\t\tthese as the versatility of an actor. You don\u2019t \t\t\t\t\t\t\tallow yourself to be stereotyped. If you call me to \t\t\t\t\t\t\tdo anything for you, when I get the script, I get \t\t\t\t\t\t\tyour characterization. I can be anything you want me \t\t\t\t\t\t\tto be.
\nIt is not about playing same Ogbuefi everyday . \t\t\t\t\t\t\tYou could be challenged to do anything. These people \t\t\t\t\t\t\tare too lazy on directing and writing of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\tscripts. They are laid back and lazy. For instance I \t\t\t\t\t\t\tsee someone who has played the role of a nun, I give \t\t\t\t\t\t\ther the role of a prostitute. That is the beauty of \t\t\t\t\t\t\tit all.
\nThat is the challenge. If you talk of film now, I \t\t\t\t\t\t\tloved Hostages where I was Nasir Mohammed, a rich \t\t\t\t\t\t\tman\u2019s son. I love Contractor with Ramsey, Antar \t\t\t\t\t\t\tLaniyan and myself. I love Dangerous Twins.
\nTade Ogidan <\/strong>
\nWhen you work with Tade Ogidan it is like, you \t\t\t\t\t\t\thave to be on your toes at all times. You couldn\u2019t \t\t\t\t\t\t\tbut be at your best at all times.
\nHe is cereberal and you must get it right at all \t\t\t\t\t\t\ttimes. You are drilled and grilled. It is very \t\t\t\t\t\t\texhaustive working with him.
\nFamily pressure <\/strong>
\nMy father was initially troubled about my chosen \t\t\t\t\t\t\tcareer. But when he finally found out that I was \t\t\t\t\t\t\tcarving a niche for myself, he couldn\u2019t but relax \t\t\t\t\t\t\tand we are best of friends now. We couldn\u2019t see eye \t\t\t\t\t\t\tto eye before.
\nLeisure <\/strong>
\nI love nature so much. I couldn\u2019t\u00a0 be seen at \t\t\t\t\t\t\tparties. I love the beaches. I would readily pack a \t\t\t\t\t\t\tpicnic basket armed with a jockey bag. I watch \t\t\t\t\t\t\tpeople on boat rides or those swimming\u00a0 while under \t\t\t\t\t\t\ta coconut tree. I get ideas and write.
\nHome <\/strong>
\nI am married to a woman who understands me. She \t\t\t\t\t\t\tknew I was an actor when she married me. She is an \t\t\t\t\t\t\texposed woman. Some things in acting don\u2019t mean \t\t\t\t\t\t\tanything to her. It is like asking how the wife of a \t\t\t\t\t\t\tgynaecologist feels.
