\nNigeria\u2019s Amata dynasty has entertainment running in its blood.
\nThere are three generations of actors, directors and producers \u2013 all have played, or are playing a crucial role in Nigeria\u2019s film and theatre industry.
\nThen there\u2019s the multi-skilled Fred who works as an actor, producer and director. He is the king of the Nigerian video industry \u2013 the enormously popular home-grown film business.
\nFred Amata is married to Agatha (school friend) for over 10 years and are blessed with kids. When asked how it has been?
\nHe said \u201cIt has been sweet and sour as usual with life. Ten years of marriage, that\u2019s ten years of plenty sweet and plenty sour. But somehow because of that friendship, that bonding, we have managed to weather the storm and still stay friends, which is very important. Which is why I said this time we must leave everything at home, and come here and spend quality time with the family.\u201d
\nAccording to Fred friendship is very important in marriage \u201cFriendship, communication. Love grows from friendship. Love doesn\u2019t come. what\u2019s love? Love must grow from friendship. You cannot just see somebody and say I love this person, wetin you love? There must be a connection and it is that connection that is friendship before it develops into what is deeper which is love and love has its own levels. The love that boyfriend and girlfriend experience may not necessary be the same love a boyfriend and a girlfriend with one kid will experience. And then down the line, marriage now brings its own, marriage now unites two families and you know, love just starts to develop different meanings, and you now begin to realize that tolerance is a major part of love. And that\u2019s another ball game altogether.\u201d

\nFred Amata is a top player in Nollywood and he is proud of that. For a time though, the travails of his marriage to television presenter, Agatha, made them darlings of the soft-sell magazines for all the wrong reasons.
\nTheir eventual separation seemed to cool speculations down, though they were riled again when rumours surfaced of his romance with actress, Ibinabo Febresima. But don\u2019t you dare call him a divorcee or you injure his sensibility, scare the hell out of him and get an unsolicited lecture in English language register.
\nWhen we recently asked how he came to be divorced from his wife he exclaimed, \u201csee the word, d-i-v-o-r-c-e-e, that word is not synonymous with me.
\nI did not say I am a divorcee. I said I am separated.\u201d You wonder the difference since the best dictionary is still unable to segregate completely the two words- separated and divorcee except that divorce (e) technically allows you to remarry. Not withstanding the constraint, Fred says he has started a new romance.
\nIf you think this information has opened up a new vista or line of questioning, one you probe by trying to know who she is and whether the romance will lead to marriage, you get the shocker of your life. Your probing mind is sadly restrained with that reporter\u2019s waterloo.
\n\u201cNo comment,\u201d he says and it came with the finality of a judge\u2019s gavel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family of actors<\/strong>
\nHe would rather readily tell you that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tacting runs in their blood from his \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfather who, according to him, produced \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe first colour film ever shot in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNigeria and Africa in 1957 down to the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tyoungest Amata still in her mother\u2019s \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twomb. The theatre and what goes on in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tit, he enthused, is neither new nor \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstrange to the Amatas. But another thing \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\the does very well which is probably not \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tknown to most of his fans is that he \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tplays football, though not necessarily \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin the mode of J.J Okocha, or Kanu \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNwankwo. Still he boasted he would have \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbeen in the same category with the two \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tif he had pursued the calling instead of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\this sojourn in Nollywood. Nonetheless, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\the revealed that his club-All Stars \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tInternational- is the first club to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tproduce a governor- elect in the person \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof Barrister Tunde Fashola of Lagos \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tState.
\nFred the footballer<\/strong>
\n\u201cIt will interest you to know that my \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tclub is the first football club to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tproduce a governor-elect in Lagos state. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBarrister Tunde Fashola is actually my \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tteam mate. We played football together \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tboth in Nigeria and Ghana.\u201d
\nThat lost love is the opportunity cost \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor choosing acting. And he has made \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgood for himself as well as for the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAmatas in the choosing profession.
\nThe Isoko born actor who won the Best \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tActor award in 1997 for his role in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMortal Inheritance had garnered a lot of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tother awards and several nominations in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe past in supporting actor role and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdirecting category. He speaks fervently \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tabout acting, his first love and would \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trefuse to subscribe to the view or \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\topinion that standards and quality of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Nollywood product is falling. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRather, he would tell you to assess \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNollywood from the perspective of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfew core professionals who, according to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thim, had cornered a lot of awards \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlocally and internationally.
\nThe inheritors<\/strong>
\n\u201cIt is this same category of players \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat will inherit the industry after the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u2018come easy- go easy\u2019 majority sojourners \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmust have been choked off. There is what \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tI have called over the years a quagmire \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof mediocrities- a gathering of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmediocres in Nollywood. But then there\u2019s \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\talso a handful of thorough professionals \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand that handful are growing and the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tquality of the films they are making is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tactually of international standard. And \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthese are the people who are going to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tshape the industry and remove the chaff \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfrom the wheat -the true professionals \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twill stay.\u201d
\nBut he equally admitted that somehow, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tquality is dropping not necessarily as a \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tresult of professional incompetence or \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinadequacy on the part of the players \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbut a drop induced by the dynamics of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbusiness survival. Most producers and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdirectors, he reveals, are constrained \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto compromise quality because of lack of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tadequate financing in the industry.
\nThe theatre graduate of the University \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof Jos is equally a family man. He tells \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tyou excitedly that he loves cooking \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tespecially Egusi soup and that he \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treadily cooks for his family.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
