Former Black Stars coach Claude Leroy is the latest name to be linked with the Saudi Arabia national team job.

The Frenchman was sacked by Oman following their poor showing in the Gulf Cup in November, and a failure to qualify the nation for the 2011 Asian Cup.

The tactician is however being considered by the Saudi FA to replace Jose Peseiro who was sacked after Saudi’s 0-2 loss to Syria in their opening game of the 2011 Asia Cup ongoing in Qatar. Le Roy revealed he was saddened to be no longer in charge of Al-Ahmar .

“I don’t know if sacked is a word I like, but we have collaborated to end our three years,” the coach said. “I’m sad because I honestly thought we were building something.

“We played two Gulf Cups and didn’t actually lose a game — I feel I didn’t achieve what I wanted, that is, World Cup qualification. I thought we could continue this with me but it seems others don’t think so. Sometimes people in football don’t understand, there are a lot of different characters.

“I can’t be bitter because I’ve had three fantastic years in Oman and built great relations with everybody there. I’ve been lucky to work under a great President with fantastic staff members.

“It’s a surprise but that’s football it’s a permanent lesson in humility — I’ve had some offers and we’ll see where I go but I’m in no hurry,” he concluded.

Leroy was coach of Ghana between 2006-2008 during which period he led the Black Stars to a bronze medal at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Ghana after which he failed to extend his contract after it’s expiration and was replaced by Milovan Rajevac.
