Support for the federal government\u2019s insistence to withdraw subsidy on oil came from an unusual quarters at the weekend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A section of Nollywood actors declared their support for the proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n

At a roundtable discourse at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, the artistes gave a nod of approval to the planned removal of the subsidy.<\/span><\/p>\n

They however warned that a lot more needed to be done by the federal government to restore people\u2019s confidence in governance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Peace Anyiam-Osigwe explained that it was the responsibility of government to take care of the people and so it has to initiate programmes to make them happy.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to her, \u201cThe common people think that once the subsidy on oil is removed those in government will use it to enrich themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019Therefore, government has to be accountable and make the dividends of the oil subsidy available to the masses of the country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Zack Orji, Zeb Ejiro, Zik Zulu Okafor, Segun Arinze and others agreed that the time had indeed come for Nigerians to stomach the truth about deregulation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They contended that if the subsidy is not removed now and government does not gird up its loins to improve the lot of the citizens, the future may indeed be gloomy and bleak.<\/span><\/p>\n

Special Assistant to the President on Documentation and Research, Oronto Douglas, pleaded with the Nollywood artistes to continue to use their profession to preach the need for deregulation of the downstream sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
