The people of Opuekeba community, Warri North Council Area of Delta State have called on Federal and state governments to prevail on Chevron Nigeria Limited to implement the memorandum of\u00a0understanding, MoU, reached with the community and correct the injustice meted on them.<\/p>\n

They held that, as contributors to the nation\u2019s economy since the discovery of oil in their land in 1971, they have not been treated as a host community to the oil exploration company.<\/p>\n

In a statement by the chairman of the community, Mr. Federal Johnson and Secretary, Mr. Godfrey Tom, they said they were evicted from their ancestral land\u00a0 with a promise that Chevron would build a new town for the community.<\/p>\n

They said due to the non-implementation of the MoU, Delta State government, Chevron and representatives of Opuekeba community reached a resolution in 2009 mandating Chevron to give Opuekeba the rights of a host community and effect payment of compensation due the community.<\/p>\n

According to the statement, oil exploration in their community has led to the emission of poisonous gas and strange ailment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
