Adrian says he and Christine are firm friends<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Adrian Chiles marches<\/span> into a private members<\/span> club in west London<\/span> looking as far from a<\/span> TV star as possible in<\/span> an over-sized leather jacket, blue<\/span> jeans and running shoes, not to mention<\/span> his famous scowl.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s less than a month since the 44-<\/span>year-old and his \u2018on-screen wife\u2019<\/span> Christine Bleakley were dumped<\/span> from the Daybreak sofa by ITV after<\/span> more than a year of difficult headlines<\/span> and personal attacks. Since then,<\/span> Adrian has had time to contemplate<\/span> what went wrong. Too much time, in<\/span> fact.
<\/span><\/p>\n

He still wakes up in a cold sweat<\/span> at 3.45 every morning, expecting to<\/span> drag himself out of bed.<\/span> But this is the first time he\u2019s put<\/span> those thoughts into words, which is<\/span> not easy for a man who prefers to<\/span> keep his feelings very much to himself.<\/span> \u2018For the first time ever the other<\/span> day I thought, \u201cCan I do something<\/span> else?\u201d,\u2019 he admits. What would he do?<\/span> \u2018I\u2019d love to write a novel. And I want to<\/span> do something positive with my time,<\/span> like work with young offenders.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a far cry from April 2010, when<\/span> Adrian quit the BBC with a certain<\/span> degree of swagger. He and Christine<\/span> appeared to be the new king and queen<\/span> of TV after putting the previously lowrating<\/span> BBC1 7pm slot on the map with<\/span> The One Show. So, when BBC1 controller<\/span> Jay Hunt wanted to replace him<\/span> on the Friday night edition with the<\/span> supposedly more entertaining Chris<\/span> Evans, Adrian wasn\u2019t having it.<\/span><\/p>\n

His<\/span> agents negotiated a multi-million<\/span> pound, four-year deal with ITV to<\/span> relaunch its struggling breakfast show,<\/span> GMTV, become the face of its football<\/span> coverage and launch a chat show.<\/span> Within weeks, with his encouragement,<\/span> Christine followed.<\/span> Well-known for his generally negative<\/span> outlook on life, Adrian appeared<\/span> to have been intoxicated by showbiz<\/span> hype for the first time.
<\/span><\/p>\n

He assured<\/span> Christine their move to the other end<\/span> of the TV day would be a good one<\/span> and said as much during an expensive<\/span> advertising campaign he now regrets.<\/span> (Pictures of a slim Adrian and tanned<\/span> Christine were erected on billboards<\/span> throughout the country, while Adrian<\/span> confidently predicted the show would<\/span> be a success in a series of press interviews.)<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\u2018I didn\u2019t want to do it, but I<\/span> went along with it. Part of me liked<\/span> the idea I was on billboards, but it was<\/span> calamitous,\u2019 he laments.<\/span> Likewise, he thinks the axing of<\/span> GMTV was a mistake. \u2018To the core<\/span> audience it looked like we\u2019d murdered<\/span> everyone and come on with<\/span> their blood still on the carpet.\u2019<\/span> Another \u2018disaster \u2019, Adrian<\/span> believes, was the studio, featuring a<\/span> lurid purple couch and a panoramic<\/span> view of London\u2019s skyline, but which<\/span> would be pitch black for most of the<\/span> show during the winter. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018One of my<\/span> colleagues referred to the studio as a<\/span> purple cave of sadness,\u2019 he says.<\/span> But Adrian insists he is not trying to<\/span> pass the buck and denies he described<\/span> the show as a \u2018crock of s***\u2019, as was<\/span> reported. \u2018Part of the problem probably<\/span> was me,\u2019 he concedes. \u2018Looking<\/span> back on it, am I right for breakfast<\/span> TV? I thought I was dead right for it,<\/span> and now I think I was probably dead<\/span> wrong. What<\/span>
housewife wants<\/span> to look at me in<\/span> the mornings? A<\/span> lot of blame has to<\/span> come to my door.<\/span> To my detriment,<\/span> I never watched<\/span> breakfast TV.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet despite the<\/span> critical backlash,<\/span> ratings were<\/span> improving. \u2018At the<\/span> end, we felt as if<\/span> we were getting<\/span> somewhere. That\u2019s the frustration of<\/span> it,\u2019 Adrian says.<\/span> He found the criticism of his<\/span> demeanour and appearance particularly<\/span> hard to stomach. \u2018It did start to<\/span> gnaw away. The game\u2019s up when you<\/span> start to doubt yourself \u2013 and sometimes<\/span> I did,\u2019 he says. \u2018I\u2019m generally<\/span> not happy in my skin. Everyone<\/span> would say I didn\u2019t look comfortable,<\/span> and the more they said it, the more<\/span> uncomfortable and grumpy I got.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

One morning, he had a particularly<\/span> tough moment. \u2018I was talking and<\/span> saw myself on the TV monitor and<\/span> thought it was my dad looking back.<\/span> Most people have that moment in a<\/span> mirror but I had it on live television.<\/span> My dad is fine, but I don\u2019t want to<\/span> look like him, because he\u2019s 73.\u2019<\/span> In the dark days Adrian turned to<\/span> his Catholic faith to help him find<\/span> calm. In fact, during<\/span> Lent, with the<\/span> Daybreak stress<\/span> mounting, he<\/span> went to Mass every<\/span> day.
<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018It was<\/span> fantastic, actually.<\/span> It\u2019s a way of finding<\/span> some peace<\/span> and quiet. I\u2019m not<\/span> remotely pious or<\/span> evangelical about<\/span> it, but I go and I<\/span> enjoy it.\u2019 On one<\/span> occasion, Adrian<\/span> was asked to give that day\u2019s reading.<\/span> \u2018It was from the Old Testament,\u2019 he<\/span> recalls. \u2018There were three verses. To<\/span> my horror, the word daybreak was in<\/span> the second and third verse!\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking<\/span> back on it, am I right for breakfast<\/span> TV?<\/span> What<\/span> housewife wants<\/span> to look at me in<\/span> the mornings?<\/span><\/div>\n

Adrian and Christine remained<\/span> committed to Daybreak, but they<\/span> knew \u2018something was going on\u2019 when<\/span> things went quiet after the announcement<\/span> the show was getting a new editor.<\/span> Eventually, their joint agent told<\/span> them ITV had decided they would be<\/span> \u2018let go\u2019. Adrian says initially it was a<\/span> \u2018relief, because I\u2019d felt it was coming\u2019.<\/span> But, he adds, \u2018It got a bit messy in the<\/span> end, as these things always do. Maybe<\/span> if I\u2019d gone in on all fours and begged,<\/span> it might have made a difference. But<\/span> probably not \u2013 the decision had been<\/span> made at a high corporate level.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

He has been reported as saying<\/span> \u2018dark forces\u2019 were at work when the<\/span> news of his departure was leaked<\/span> weeks before he wanted it to go public.<\/span> Was that true? \u2018No, no,\u2019 he says,<\/span> with exasperation. \u2018That was said to<\/span> somebody and somehow it, er\u2026 there<\/span> was no conspiracy. Perhaps there<\/span>
was a conspiracy. I don\u2019t know\u2026 I<\/span> was a bit humiliated. But it wasn\u2019t as<\/span> if they\u2019d leaked that I had six nipples<\/span> \u2013 it was something that was true.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s his relationship with<\/span> Christine. During The One Show<\/span> period, when Adrian was still married<\/span> to radio presenter Jane Garvey, the<\/span> tabloids speculated about whether<\/span> they were having an affair. Media<\/span> interest cooled when Christine\u2019s<\/span> romance with Frank Lampard went<\/span> public. Near the end of their Daybreak<\/span> stint, it was rumoured the couple had<\/span> fallen out. When I raise this, Adrian<\/span> shakes his head. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Imagine seeing your<\/span> best friend every day at 4am. There is<\/span> so much potential for enmity, it\u2019s a<\/span> miracle we\u2019re still firm friends,\u2019 he<\/span> says. \u2018Look, she\u2019d get the hump with<\/span> me. I\u2019d get the hump with her. But we could always have a laugh. I\u2019m going out with her tonight, and we speak more or less every day.\u2019 In fact, the only \u2018beef\u2019 Adrian has with the ITV bosses is in relation to Christine. \u2018I understand why they got rid of me but it\u2019s bonkers they got rid of her.\u2019
<\/span><\/p>\n

I wonder whether the public became less interested in the pair when they realised there was no romance. Viewers wanted the next Richard and Judy, didn\u2019t they? \u2018Yes,\u2019 he concedes. \u2018It did give it a certain energy. But that wasn\u2019t our intention and you\u2019re powerless to stop what people are thinking.\u2019
<\/span><\/p>\n

Adrian says Christine\u2019s relationship with Frank changed their friendship \u2018only slightly, in terms of time. When you get together with someone, you take on board all their friends and family. But that was fine. He\u2019s come round to my place to watch West Brom lose on TV. He\u2019s lived my life!\u2019 Before Adrian landed the One Show job, he was a well-regarded but relatively low-profile presenter of business show Working Lunch and Match Of The Day 2. In fact, wife Jane, then with Radio Five Live, got more attention.
<\/span><\/p>\n

The couple divorced in October 2009, but he is a doting dad to their two daughters, Evelyn Katarina, 11, and Sian Mary, eight. Regarding his TV career, it would be easy to think it was in trouble judging by the press coverage. But, in fact, he has been lauded by sports insiders since becoming the main football presenter for ITV. The channel has also committed to a new series of his topical panel series That Sunday Night Show, which has attracted strong ratings.
<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018ITV entrusted me with three jobs, and I\u2019ve still got two, so I feel grateful. Three was probably too many in the first place,\u2019 he rationalises. Does he ever regret leaving his comfortable BBC home? \u2018Absolutely not. The One Show was very successful. But I enjoyed it without being proud of it. I was proud of Daybreak but couldn\u2019t say I enjoyed it because we never got given a chance from the start. I\u2019ve learned so much about television in the last 18 months. I\u2019m a better and much more experienced broadcaster than if I\u2019d stayed at the BBC. With ITV you live and die by the sword, but I haven\u2019t got a problem with that. I\u2019m battered, but not broken, and, ultimately, I still feel very lucky.\u2019
<\/span><\/p>\n

But, after his experiences on Daybreak, one thing this eternal pessimist will never be again is positive: \u2018I\u2019m bowing out to positivity. This is the last time I assume anything is going to work. I was wrong. And it hurts.\u2019
