\nWarri \u2014 THE Niger Delta Indigenous Movement for Radical Change has warned Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) against treating the Bonga oil spill with kid gloves, saying that it has commenced the mobilisation of both local and international monitors to beam searchlight on the spill.<\/p>\n
In a statement signed by its President, Nelly Emma, Secretary, John Sailor and Public Relations Officer, Mukoro Stanley, the group described the spill as the worst ever in the region in over a decade and said that it must be treated with all seriousness by Shell or the company should be ready for rough days ahead.<\/p>\n
While claiming that the spill was fast spreading to various shorelines of the oil-rich Niger Delta region, the group promised to mobilise environmentalists, human right activists and media groups across the globe to monitor its clean-up.<\/p>\n
The statement read in part; ‘We are saddened by the Bonga oil spillage; this is the worst ever in over a decade in the region and we are warning Shell not to treat it with kid gloves.<\/p>\n
Shell must take practical steps to clean up the Bonga oil spillage. Shell should take up responsibility and take steps to do something about the damage caused by the spill to fishermen and farmers.<\/p>\n
‘We are already mobilising reputable environmentalists, human right activists and media groups across the globe to come down to the Niger Delta region and join forces with us to monitor the clean up exercise of the Bonga oil spillage that is spreading fast to various shorelines in the region.’<\/p>\n
