{"id":24186,"date":"2011-12-30T09:09:06","date_gmt":"2011-12-30T09:09:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/12\/egypt-rights-groups-urge-to-free-jailed-blogger\/"},"modified":"2011-12-30T09:09:06","modified_gmt":"2011-12-30T09:09:06","slug":"egypt-rights-groups-urge-to-free-jailed-blogger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/12\/30\/egypt-rights-groups-urge-to-free-jailed-blogger\/","title":{"rendered":"Egypt: Rights Groups Urge to Free Jailed Blogger"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rnw.nl\/africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/rnw180.png\" alt=\"Radio Netherlands Worldwide (Hilversum)\" title=\"Visit Radio Netherlands Worldwide (Hilversum)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>29 December 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><em>Thirty rights groups and activists united on Thursday in a call for Egypt to release a jailed blogger who has been staging a hunger strike since August.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A military court sentenced Michael Nabil, 26, to three years in prison in April for insulting the armed forces on his blog.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If Michael Nabil perishes, so does the dream of a free Egypt,&#8221; said Hillel Neuer, executive director of the Geneva-based UN Watch.<\/p>\n<p>The coalition has appealed to UN chief Ban Ki-moon, rights commissioner Navi Pillay and several UN special rapporteurs to highlight Nabil&#8217;s case and press the Egyptian authorities to release him.<\/p>\n<p>The Egyptian military took charge of the country after a popular uprising forced veteran president Hosni Mubarak to resign in February.<\/p>\n<p>It has faced criticism for sentencing thousands of civilians in military courts for offences ranging from assault and rape to insulting the ruling generals.<\/p>\n<p>In a blog he wrote in March, Nabil said the army had been protecting its own interests and not those of the Egyptian people.<\/p>\n<p>Nabil is now consuming only water in place of the juice he was previously accepting, UN Watch said, and his condition is believed to be &#8220;dire&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Other signatories to Thursday&#8217;s appeal included the Moroccan Organisation for Human Rights and the Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society.<\/p>\n<p><em>ANP\/AFP<\/em><\/p>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211; All the Time<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><strong>More News on allAfrica.com<\/strong><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 29 December 2011 Thirty rights groups and activists united on Thursday in a call for Egypt to release a jailed blogger who has been staging a hunger strike since August.
