Burma's heroine doesn't deserve this schmaltz\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span><span title=\"Chris Tookey\"><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span><span title=\"2011-12-30T08:33+0000\"><\/span><\/span><br \/>\nRating: <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"rating\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/b90drating_showbiz_2.gif\" width=\"55\" height=\"9\" alt=\"2 Star Rating\" title=\"2 out of 5\" \/><\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Oh dear, I wish I admired this film as much as I do its leading character, the Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi, played with reverential sweetness by Michelle Yeoh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Director Luc Besson is never subtle, but here \u2014 encouraged by Rebecca Frayn\u2019s remorselessly earnest screenplay \u2014 he ladles on the schmaltz and melodrama for\u00a0 two-and-a-half hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The story is worth telling, but not in this way. The good guys are all sweetness and light, none more so than David Thewlis as our heroine\u2019s equally saintly husband, Michael Aris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The film badly needed some light and shade, some hint perhaps that the heroine is not perfect, or an insight into her politics, which are too generalised \u2014 all we are told is that she\u2019s for democracy and \u2018basic human rights\u2019 but against violence.
