Two Ekurhuleni metro police officers who spent Christmas behind bars after being arrested for corruption were granted bail on Thursday in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court.<\/p>\n

Patrick Shongwe, 38, cluster commander of the Ekurhuleni metro police department, was granted R15,000 bail and Rolsten Pillay bail of R12,000.<\/p>\n

They were warned to appear again on March 20.<\/p>\n

Shongwe allegedly threatened motorists with arrest, unlawfully impounded vehicles, extorted money from motorists, and confiscated goods from street vendors.<\/p>\n

Pillay, who was arrested earlier in December following a tip-off, had approached authorities for a plea bargain deal, according to earlier reports.<\/p>\n

The two were believed to be have been part of a syndicate. – Sapa<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
