{"id":23610,"date":"2011-12-29T13:17:02","date_gmt":"2011-12-29T13:17:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/12\/cameroon-stars-back-etoo-in-row\/"},"modified":"2011-12-29T13:17:02","modified_gmt":"2011-12-29T13:17:02","slug":"cameroon-stars-back-etoo-in-row","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/12\/29\/cameroon-stars-back-etoo-in-row\/","title":{"rendered":"Cameroon stars back Eto&#8217;o in row"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><span>By Leocadia Bongben<\/span><br \/><span>BBC Sport, Yaounde<\/span><\/span> <span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/57607000\/jpg\/_57607426_angbwa_raw_gtty.jpg\" width=\"466\" height=\"300\" alt=\"Benoit Angbwa (right) in action for Anzhi Makachkala \" \/> Benoit Angbwa (right) is a team-mate of Samuel Eto&#8217;o&#8217;s at Anzhi Makhachkala<\/span> <\/p>\n<p>Two Cameroon internationals have said they will not play for the national team until a 15-match ban imposed on captain Samuel Eto&#8217;o is lifted.<\/p>\n<p>Jean Makoun and Benoit Angbwa have written to the country&#8217;s football federation Fecafoot with the ultimatum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/sport1\/hi\/football\/16182392.stm\">Eto&#8217;o was banned for his role<\/a> in a strike by the national squad in a row over late payment of appearance fees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do not expect to have us in the team so long as the sanctions have not been lifted,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p>Vice-captain Enoh Eyong received a two-match ban for his role in the affair.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The decision [to strike] was that of the entire team &#8211; our team-mates were just our spokesmen and we formally denounce the sanctions against them,&#8221; Makoun and Angbwa said in separate but identical letters, sent through their lawyers.<\/p>\n<p><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/57607000\/jpg\/_57607489_makoun2011.jpg\" width=\"226\" height=\"282\" alt=\"Jean Makoun of Cameroon \" \/> Jean Makoun has also backed Eto&#8217;o over the ban<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The statement was copied to the Ministry of Sports, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/sport1\/hi\/football\/16126160.stm\">who&#8217;s long-running dispute with Fecafoot<\/a> was at the root of the problems leading to the original strike.<\/p>\n<p>Makoun plays for Olympiakos in Greece while Angbwa is Eto&#8217;o&#8217;s club colleague at the Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.<\/p>\n<p>Some fans in Cameroon have also been angered by the ban on Eto&#8217;o, which rules him out of qualifying for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and most of the preliminary campaign for the World Cup in Brazil 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Planned protests in Yaounde, scheduled for 24 December, were called off after they were banned by the local authorities because of concerns over public order.<\/p>\n<p>Eto&#8217;o himself has not challenged the sanction against him.<\/p>\n<p>Fecafoot paid <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/sport1\/hi\/football\/16315498.stm\">$500,000 compensation to Algeria&#8217;s football federation<\/a> for the costs they incurred over a friendly match which had to be called off following the players strike.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> By Leocadia Bongben BBC Sport, Yaounde Benoit Angbwa (right) is a team-mate of Samuel Eto&#8217;o&#8217;s at Anzhi Makhachkala Two Cameroon internationals have said they will not play for the national team until a 15-match ban imposed on captain Samuel Eto&#8217;o is lifted.
