IT WAS a gloomy scene at Awutu Senya near Winneba in the Central Region when a total of 27 people lost their lives in a tragic accident during the Christmas festivities on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

The accident, which occurred around 10:00pm, also injured about 27 people, comprising 18 females and 14 males, who are currently in critical condition at the Winneba Government Hospital.<\/p>\n

The accident happened when a water tanker with registration number GR 6435 F, being driven by a certain Adu Fenny, had a break failure and started knocking down and smashing people who were by the road side until it got to a spot near the house of former Vice President Kow Nkensen Arkaah.<\/p>\n

The tanker driver drove into a crowd of people having a street jam, as part of the Christmas festivities, killing 27 instantly.<\/p>\n

The bodies of the deceased had since been deposited at the Winneba Government Hospital Morgue.<\/p>\n

The bodies of some deceased persons were mutilated, with internal organs like intestines gushing out, while others had their heads smashed. Blood was all over the place and pieces of flesh were scattered by the roadside, as some bodies were damaged beyond recognition.<\/p>\n

Briefing DAILY GUIDE<\/em><\/strong>, the Acting Medical Superintendent in charge of the Winneba Government Hospital, Dr George Prah, confirmed the death of 27 persons.<\/p>\n

He said the hospital would do everything possible to save the lives of those in critical condition.<\/p>\n

DAILY GUIDE<\/em><\/strong> also gathered that the driver of the water tanker earlier on had a problem with the vehicle at Korle-Bu, a suburb of the town, and decided to repair it himself. However the vehicle later had brake failure and ran into the crowd, resulting in the tragedy.<\/p>\n

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Awutu Senya, Nuhu Adams, indicated that he would meet with the family members of deceased persons to see how best they could organise a mass burial for them.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, some New Patriotic Party (NPP) gurus in the region have visited the bereaved families.<\/p>\n

The NPP gurus included Mfantseman West Parliamentary Candidate Stephen Asamoah-Boateng, Cape Coast Parliamentary Candidate Alfred Kojo Thompson and the Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya, Hawa Koomson.<\/p>\n

The NPP gurus went to the hospital and family houses of the deceased persons to console their relatives and also pledge the party\u2019s commitment to support them.<\/p>\n

The Central Regional Minister, Comfort Ama Benyiwa Doe and her entourage also visited the bereaved families and injured persons at the hospital.<\/p>\n

She donated GH\u00a210,000 to the hospital authorities to cater for the victims.<\/p>\n

When DAILY GUIDE<\/em><\/strong> got to the hospital, family members who could not contain the sad situation had broken down in tears.<\/p>\n

It took the intervention of other people around to console them, as some of them lay on the floor soaked in tears.<\/p>\n
