A WITNESS yesterday recounted before the Lusaka High Court how former vice-president George Kunda’s wife, Irene allegedly donated hammer mills and money to women clubs in Muchinga Constituency in Serenje District, to influence the electorate to vote for her husband.<\/p>\n
Judith Chisenga said in the election petition hearing, that Mrs Kunda distributed the hammer mills and money in Chief Chibale’s area in Serenje, where she urged the electorate to vote for her husband who was MMD candidate in the September 20 tripartite elections.<\/p>\n
Ms Chisenga, 36, a farmer in Chief Chibale’s area, told Kabwe-based Judge, Mungeni Mulenga that Ms Kunda donated two hammer mills and K6 million to two women clubs in the area in August 2011.<\/p>\n
Mrs Chisenga, who is also Chibale area women’s association Chairperson, was testifying in a matter in which losing PF candidate John Chama has petitioned the former vice-president’s re-election to Parliament citing malpractices and abuse of State resources.<\/p>\n
She said before handing over the hammer mills and cash to the women, Mrs Kunda urged them to again vote for the ruling party and Mr Kunda if they wanted development to continue in the area.<\/p>\n
When told by one of the defence lawyers, Sunday Nkonde, that the donation of the hammer mills happened in June and not August as had stated, Ms Chisenga said she did not pay much attention to the date because she did not know that the matter would later arise.<\/p>\n
She said she attended Mr Kunda’s rallies in the area and one of his key messages to the electorate was about empowerment that he was promising to take to the area.<\/p>\n
When asked by Mr Nkonde whether she was aware about the Ministry of Community Development and Ministry of Youth and Sport as being some of the Government ministries that were empowering women, Ms Chisenga answered in the negative. Trial continues.<\/p>\n
