Sebastian Larsson<\/a> has insisted Sunderland<\/a> are confident of getting a result against Manchester City<\/a> in their New Years’ Day clash at the Stadium of Light.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Swede is looking to follow the example of West Brom, who secured a 0-0 Boxing Day draw with Roberto Mancini’s at the Hawthorns, in turn allowing Manchester United to draw level on points in the title race.<\/span><\/p>\n

City’s recent blip in form has inspired Larsson, who is hopeful the Black Cats can continue their positive start to life under new boss Martin O’Neil.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We are now expecting to pick up points and that will be no different when we play Manchester City,” he told the Sunderland Echo.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

“It will be incredibly hard, but it is one of those games you really look forward to as you can test yourselves against the very best.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not an easy place to come and we want to get it back to the fortress it has been in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEverton looked very happy to take a point on Boxing Day, which shows how hard it is to come to Sunderland at the moment. Hopefully that is a sign of things to come\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the appointment of the former Aston Villa and Celtic boss at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland have begun to gradually climb up the Premier League table – something Larsson is keen to maintain.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We are desperate to push up the league and hopefully we have shown we are capable of doing that,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Everyone can see we’re heading in the right direction. We’ve picked up a few points recently and have to keep that going.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The manager [O\u2019Neill] has come in at a time when we’ve got a lot of games, so we are learning more and more about what he wants and vice versa.”<\/span><\/p>\n
