The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) says it is not surprised at the exit of its 2008 flagbearer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, from the party.

“This is something that has been on the cards for some time so it does not come as a surprise to the party that he (Nduom) has taken this decision” CPP General Secretary, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet has said.

Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom officially announced his departure from the CPP Wednesday at a news conference in Accra and said he would run on the ticket of a new political party in the 2012 general elections.

Dr. Nduom’s movement which would metamorphose into a political party to present a credible leadership to Ghanaians would be outdoored February 2012.

But his exit has been met with mixed reactions from the Ghanaian populace. While some have linked it to the differences he had with party Chair, Samia Yaba Nkrumah, who threatened to sanction him from the party for indiscipline, others believe Nduom’s exit is a blessing in disguise considering his abysmal performance as the party’s flag-bearer in the 2008 elections.

However, the party’s General Secretary, in an interview with Joy News’ Araba Koomson said the party leadership knew Dr. Nduom would leave the CPP especially after the people he favoured to occupy positions in the party lost at the National Congress in September.

According to him, Dr. Nduom thinks the absence of his people in key positions in the party would affect his presidential ambition hence his decision to quit.

“He (Nduom) has felt that unless his people are there, he cannot operate with the party apparatus. Even prior to the recent congress held in September, during campaign, he intimated that if certain persons who he favoured to occupy positions were not there; then he himself may not contest as the presidential candidate and may not be part of the party moving forward,” Ivor added.

The CPP General Secretary observed that even though Dr. Nduom has not officially written to the party about his decision, they accept his public announcement in good faith.

Conceding that there might be repercussions in the rank and file of the party of Dr. Nduom’s exit, he said the CPP remains focused and more poised to make an impact in 2012.

Ivor Greenstreet urged party members to rally behind Samia Nkrumah to build the foundations of the party at the grassroots in their bid to increase the CPP representation in Parliament.
